  • What Apple Watch you need to run watchOS 8

    WOW.

    STILL supporting the Series 3?!?!?
Since they still sell it, and they still offer AppleCare+, they are certain to support it for at least another two years, as failure to support an under warranty device is an engraved invitation to multiple lawsuits, class action and otherwise, and a violation of law in multiple countries. When Apple stops selling it, then and only then will the countdown to end of support start. Indeed, if Apple follows their own pattern, with the Series 2, that’s exactly how it will play out. For example, if Apple ceases selling the Series 3 this Autumn, depending on the specific date relative to the release of WatchOS 8, the Series 3 can be expected to support WatchOS 10. If the Series 3 isn’t discontinued until the Spring, then WatchOS 11 support is likely.

I updated my Apple Watch series 3 without any such gyrations. It’s unreasonable for Apple to still be selling a product in the same year they drop support for it.
the cellular version will update fine, it's the GPS version that won't. Apple actually came out and said last week that they recommended unpairing the AW3 to update it.
I'm aware of this; but the blanket statement, "Apple Watch 3 can only be updated by unpairing now" without a qualifier that this is only true of the GPS version, is a false statement.

Respectfully, I strongly disagree with the article’s contention that it would be unsurprising for WatchOS to drop support for the Series 3 Apple Watch, if only because Apple is still selling it. I can not find a single instance of Apple dropping support for a given hardware in the same year that item was still being sold. Please show me where Apple has withdrawn support for a given device in the same year in which it was most recently sold. The mere fact that I can buy a brand new series 3 from Apple right now contradicts the idea that Apple will drop support for it at this year’s WWDC.
