  • Phil Schiller again defends Touch Bar MacBook Pro's 16GB RAM limitation

Here we go again....needless 32GB debate Round 2!!!!
    Yup.

Anyone who actually buys this years model of MacBook Pro is going to be disappointed when next years model will likely get 32GB ram and has better battery life.

That said, most people don't need 16GB, let alone 8GB.

Like, right now on my Windows 10 Desktop PC which had 32GB of ram, only 16GB of ram is ever really utilized. I have like 40 tabs open between three web browsers, and 70 tabs open in a text editor. For the sake of not destroying a SSD quickly, more RAM is preferred because it means the page file is rarely used. In fact I have it set to 0MB on my system.

Now what actually uses 16GB? Well first of all only 64bit applications can use it, which means that web browsers (which aren't completely 64-bit aware, nor are they multi-threaded) don't ever make use of more RAM even when it's available. The only application I have that is native 64-bit is Photoshop. Everything else doesn't have much or any advantage to being compiled 64-bit. 64-bit apps wind up a bit faster due to simply not having to go through the WoW32 layer.

A Mac with 32GB or 64GB is overkill and unless you're dealing with Final Cut Pro with 4K videos (including editing videos from an iPhone 6S or 7) you're still not likely to be able to utilize it.

Now, the fact that the RAM is soldered onto the MacBook Pro, means that you should buy the model with the most RAM because you will not be upgrading it. So if you need 32GB, wait for next years model, or don't use a MacBook Pro.
Four 32-bit processes would benefit from >16GB RAM. Not all of the RAM has to be addressable from a single process.

  • Apple accused of throttling iPhone 7 performance on Verizon to match slower speeds on AT&T

    I get like 80mbps on AT&T where I live.
Literally NOBODY is getting 450mbps+ anywhere.
I've never seen a more bullshit article.
450 is the max,  not the expected or average.  Look at the graph posted in the article.  Shows the iPhones getting ~2.5mbps and the Galaxy getting ~4.5mbps
Then what is the point of a non-related graph to the story?  Why claim 450 vs 600 and show a graph that only goes to a tenth of that?  Another indication of a pointless story.
There's a reason the theoretical speeds weren't mentioned until paragraph 5 of an 8-pagagraph story. If you don't understand why the lead image is related to the text, perhaps you should re-read the article. It shows how the same modem in a Galaxy S7 gets much faster speeds than the iPhone 7 on Verizon. It's clearly explained.

You've never seen a more bullshit article? Ever? OK.

It's bullshit because throttling a 600Mb modem to 450Mb wouldn't affect performance in the range shown - less than 10Mb - and that's why the chart seems irrelevant.  Were the tests conducted at the same time, with the same tower contention?  Was the signal strength the same?  I'll bet this is a pretty unscientific study.

  • Apple's new Touch Bar MacBook Pros and the future of Macs

I agree with an earlier poster - 16GB of unexpandable RAM is rather shortsighted.  It offers no improvement over the ancient, previous model, and we all end up using more in the long run than we thought we'd ever need (I thought I'd never need more than 4 - boy was I wrong).  The ages of port types and drives is a constant preoccupation in the article, yet there is no mention of this stagnant limitation.  It is also rather presumptuous of the author to state that there aren't enough people who need it without references to any study or survey.  I did enjoy a good laugh at the accidentally satirical, false choice, given between a 16 lb luggable, and a MacBook limited to 16GB of RAM.

    Seriously?

When your boss has to tell you to stop arguing over team politics at work,
that's a clear sign that your team politics are complete immature bullshit.

Obama was an inexperienced, petty, self-aggrandizing clown, now there's just a different one.
    Grow the fuck up, America.
I think you might have a misperception or bias as to both the issue being addressed and Tim's objective in writing this letter.

I suspect it requires a minimum threshold of empathy and emotional intelligence be exceeded to recognize either of those or even the point I am making here.
You didn't make a point! Beyond that Trump would have never been elected, especially by such a landslide, if it wasn't for the Democrats clearly demonstrating that the don't deserve to be in office. People need to realize that it wasn't just a case of Trump being elected but we now have a a fairly strong Republican presence in congress and the senate. If people really believed that the policies of the democrats where working for them this wouldn't be the case. The fact is the attitude of many corporate leaders, Cook included, have had a very negative impact on this country. In a nut shell this election wasn't about Trump winning so much as the public completely rejecting the policies of the current administration and their elitist attitudes to the people of this country. The last thing we needed as a country is more people in Washington speaking with a forked tongue.
Interesting definition of "landslide".  The Electoral College score was 290 to 232, and Clinton won the popular vote.  In the Senate, Democrats picked up a seat.

You have been conned by a con man who's business acumen is suspect, who doesn't pay taxes, has an almost bizarre obsession with Putin, and doesn't have any specific plans.  I saw an interesting tweet yesterday.  It asked what you will do in four years when Trump is unable to end globalism, and brown people still live here.
