  • Ford will stick with CarPlay as GM exits for Google tech

Mary Barra is totally delusional. That subscription revenue will never happen because Apple customers have the deepest pockets and will totally ignore GM vehicles.

I'm one of those that will never buy a GM car because of this stupidity.  At one time, I might have considered an EV from them, but not now.  Thinking that they are going to make 20-25 billion from subscriptions from a car system is totally crazy. I would never pay one cent for a service that my iPhone already provides me while in the car.

  • GM ditching CarPlay & Android Auto for Google-built infotainment system

We'll be sticking with our Lincolns.  No GM for us ever now.

  • Mac is less popular among Apple customers than iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch

Between my wife and I, we have 2 iPhones, 2 watches, 2 Airpod Pros, an Apple TV 4k, and I have 2 Homepod Minis in my office.  The only thing we don't have are Macs and that is simply because they are, to us, too expensive for what you get.  My Dell PC with the same performance and specs as a Macbook Pro is less than 1/2 the cost.  I simply cannot justify the extra money for the same performance.  I have used a Macbook Pro in the past when supplied by my company, and loved it.  If Apple would just come down on their pricing for the Macbook Pro, we'd jump in a heartbeat.

So far it looks like 1Password with their inclusion of a locally-created secret key along with your username and password is the most secure option for managing your password.

The most secure option for managing your passwords is to use a password keeper app that keeps its data in an encrypted database stored locally on your device, and doesn't sync it to some cloud server. That's what I do.
1Password has that option, too, but I sync my encrypted vaults through one of the synced services I already maintain.

If you're not doing any syncing do you just have the one device or are you manually recreating your vaults on each device? I can't reasonably be expected to recreate 1000s* of entries manually across devices, and then update passwords and secure data in each device when there's a single change so of course I use syncing. As someone who's been using 1Password for over 15 years I have far too much info in my vaults to want to waste time without any gain in security.

You do you, but don't conflate security with paranoia and try to balance with security with convenience so it can benefit your life, not hinder it.

    * No, of course these aren't all logins. A great deal of the entries are for other data, too. I make extensive use of the Secure Notes section with Markdown formatting to keep a great many things I don't simply want hanging out in my Documents folder more secure.

I've been using only 1Password for over 10 years, and while I may not have 1000's of entries, it's well over 1000 total with everything in it.  I also use it for other data besides logins.  It is so useful in that way. I also sync between multiple devices to keep my sanity.  It is well worth every penny I have ever spent on it!

  • Apple preparing for third-party app stores by 2024

Amazing how entitled the EU thinks they are where they can pass a law for themselves, but feel they should be allowed to take 20% of a companies global revenues for any infraction that only exists within their market.
It’s no different than Apple or Google making their developers pay a hefty fee. They have the bargaining power to get their developers to pay on their terms and the EU has the bargaining power to get Apple and Google to pay on its terms. Entitlement and fairness have nothing to do with it. It is just business.
The $99 fee to be a developer is “hefty”? And then if I develop a free app, Apple gets nothing. How is that hefty at all?
