  • Astropad's new Rock Paper Pencil iPad screen protector mimics the pen-on-paper experience

The "available from Astropad" link in the article doesn't work.

    Try this: https://astropad.com/product/rock-paper-pencil/

Of course the iPhone 15 will have USB-C! So will the next AirPods. In fact, the Apple Watch 7 and up chargers already have a USB-C connector. Why wouldn't they save millions of dollars dropping that proprietary lightning connector on just one device?
Because it is a better connector and they get a fee for certification on every cable sold.
Good point on the certification fees, but please provide the empirical metrics proving Lightning is better than USB-C.

I’d be curious to know if there are any metrics to prove whether one connector is better than the other.

To me, the Lightning connector looks like it would be better. It’s simpler, and more compact. I’m not crazy about that internal “paddle” on the USB-C. The Lightning connector body may not be as strong as the USB-C, but this might be an advantage in a smaller device like a phone, where if the cable gets flexed too far, it seems like the smaller Lightning “plug” is likely to break off, whereas the thicker USB-C would more likely stay intact and transfer the stress to the connector receptacle inside the phone chassis, damaging that part (and possibly the chassis as well).

Either way, a big issue with both types is the quality of the cable strain relief behind the connector body. This seems to be the most common point of failure with any charging cable. It doesn’t seem like the quality of this component is a part of any connector spec, since it varies so much.

  • FTC sues Amazon, alleging users are being tricked into signing up for Prime

Well as long as we're Amazon bashing here, it sure would be nice if Amazon could do something about their search and sort/filter features. It's always amazed me how relatively useless they are in this regard. It's incredibly difficult to narrow down results to specific terms or categories and sorting by lowest price first still has higher priced items higher up the list, never mind the "featured" (sponsored) items getting so much prominence.

  • What keeps the Mac relevant for Apple, despite iPhone dominance

I don't doubt that developers represent a good chunk of users needing Macs. The article seems to imply that this is the main reason for the Mac's relevancy.

Obviously, there are plenty of users that choose to use Macs for any number of activities, whether for content creation, basic office apps, or for specialized purposes. Surely, all non-developer applications must represent a huge (if not major) percentage of uses.

And so far as Macs supporting "mobile products," I note with interest that the majority of Macs are themselves mobile products, given the percentage (whether dollars or quantities) of MBP and MBA indicated in the graph. The power and flexibility of these products is what makes them so popular--and relevant.

  • EU law requiring easier iPhone battery replacement inches closer to enactment

Q1: who gets to decide what is a sufficiently replaceable battery?
Q2: is the manufacturer able to identify the proportion of the increased cost for the device as the EU cost?
Q3: does this also apply to EVs? (exactly this scenario ktappe).
    All excellent questions.
