  • Apple's upcoming Danish data center will help warm area homes

A lot of Apple's new innovations are for the environment and not even available to the consumer.

    a selfless company.
It's great what Apple is doing in terms of environmental responsibility in its buildings, but to say that Apple is a "selfless" company is absurd.    If Apple was really "selfless" and really cared about its environmental impact, they would make computers in which end users could change the battery, memory and storage, as they used to.   Instead, many of those computers wind up in landfill as people are forced to buy another computer.    Would you buy a car in which only the car company could change the battery, tires and belts?
That's over-simplification, and a bit of strawman argument.

They may have misread the pro market. For all we know, the next Mac Pro will have what you need (replaceable parts). It's about what the customers want, and how to deliver them reliably.

People like me don't upgrade computers. I also don't like third parties touching my machines and replacing parts, especially after all the hardware malware and battery explosion news in recent years. Then again, I know people who like to save money bargain hunting for parts.

I do care about too many products going to landfill, so I typically sell my devices and laptops away in usable conditions. Interesting that Apple wants to recycle their products completely now to tackle this issue, but it's probably many years away.

The car analogy is not so appropriate because they have been lacking privacy and security considerations since the beginning. So they are perceived more like a dumb heater or washing machine. But as car becomes smarter, begin to handle our information, tracking our lives, and hold us ransom, then yes I will consider the most secure car vs a car with all the parts replaceable. Heck, for all we know, cars may become fully rental or service based. So you don't need to own a car anymore.

  • Marriott likely to decide on Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa for hotels later this year

    evilution said:
They'll go for Alexa as the unit is small, cheap and can be hidden away and can actually control Hue lights if the hotel chooses to use them as well. SIRI still can't turn off scenes.

On the day you check out of your room...
Alexa, set an alarm for 2am.
Alexa, set an alarm for 3am.
Alexa, set an alarm for 4am.
Alexa, set an alarm for 5am.
Siri can trigger HomeKit scenes (on or off) handily.
However, I much prefer the Control Center HomeKit controls to avoid waking up my family.

I'd say wait until end of the year to see Apple and Amazon's latest announcements before deciding. What's the rush ?

  • Google radically scales back glassy new HQ plans, unveils conventional corporate building ...

Signature buildings are not as important as how organisations function. One of the most celebrated buildings at MIT was not the one by IM Pei but a wooden prefab dating from the war. Researchers loved it because it empowered them to do whatever they liked, including punching a hole through a wall if they needed to. Another Norman Foster designed building, the so called Guerkin in London is lovely outside and famously a terrible office space due to the circular design. The Apple Park looks nice, but in the end what happens in that building and the culture is far is more important important.

Depends on what Apple wants to do with its new campus.

It won't be just form. The campus should improve productivity and collaboration by co-locating many teams together, compared to the scattered campus today,

It can also allow Apple to pilot new technologies in IoT, energy, construction and real estate sectors. The fruit company has a lot of experiences designing and building offices, cafes, retail stores, and data centers around the world now. They also run hydro, wind, solar and bio power sources. Can't wait for new Apple products in these areas. Their signature showcases here can sell their capabilities more than press releases and placement articles.

Forget the exploding batteries it's the security or lack thereof of the Android platform that should worry Samsung users. My parents bought phones (didn't want to spend more for iPhones) Their credit card and bank accounts were hacked a month later due to an app that relayed info to a third party. Still dealing with the repercussions ...
Did you explain to them it was due to their android?

Unless his parents did something dodgy, and went out of their way to change default security settings and ignore multiple warnings not to do so, I'd suggest it didn't happen like he thinks it did. I think he's made a false assumption.
Wow from your assumption I can safely assumed his parents are geeks and no ordinary users.
Wow and wow and how many patents are that smart.
If a dodgy unapproved app got them apparently not very.
Google Play store have rogue apps too. There have been multiple reports on this. Google for them.
Apple's App Store has too. Not anything that steals banking information as far as I know which is what the OP complained about.
Yes but far fewer incidents. And those were attacked from OS X SDK.

A lot of Android security features are bullet points. They are not comparable to iOS security. ASLR, encryption are much weaker on Android.

Are you hoping for an argument? You'll not get one from me.

Yes, Apple's default security is better than Android's in some ways, but that does not equate to Android security being bad just because Apple's might be better. Nor does it change anything about the OP likely making the wrong assumption about where his parent's thieving malware came from. Highly unlikely it came from a Google Play app. No, I'd still guess it came via an email phishing spoof.
It can come from a google play app because we just agreed rogue apps are there too..
    Nope. Didn't happen.
Google got alerted to the rogue apps after the fact by the researchers, and removed them. The news are out there.

It is a cat and mouse game. Users should not rely solely on the vendors to protect themselves. Learn to detect anomalies.

    edit:
Yes, the rogue apps you agreed existed in Google Play in this sub thread. What's wrong with admitting it ? Even iOS is not imperfect.
