  • Nanoleaf rolls out new Matter home automation products at CES 2023

I am actually interested in the Skylight panels.  I have some old track lighting and globe style lights that I was thinking of hiring someone to replace with recessed lighting, this seems to be a much easier DIY option that I like the look of.  I assume they can be hardwired, but I haven't seen anything published yet or how they will be packaged(IE, is one panel hardwired then using an interconnect with the other panes, can you specify how many hardwired vs add on panels, etc).

  • Apple has a key advantage over Meta in augmented reality

I don't think the technology is there yet for AR.  For me, it needs to have all day battery life, be comfortable/non cumbersome to wear, and to not look like absolute garbage.  So far, I haven't seen a single device that accomplishes any of this, let alone all 3.  And even then, I haven't seen an AR interface that is intuitive and useful enough to make it worth wearing them.  I do believe we will eventually get to a point where AR is useful outside of industrial applications, but I don't think the technology is there yet as far as battery life, displays and general interfaces go.

I am cautiously optimistic that Apple will come up with something, but I feel like you would almost need an Apple watch or a similar device to interface with the UI, unless you want to be constantly reaching up to your temples or pulling out your iPhone.

  • Greg Joswiak confirms iPhone's future move to USB-C

This has nothing to do with devices, protocols, usb-c or any other technical issue. It’s about a foreign entity imposing its will upon an American company and forcing it to manufacture its products to their specifications. And those gloating over this will change their tunes when something better and more innovative comes along and can’t be implemented until that foreign entity gives the okay, which could take years of bureaucrats ‘studying' the issue.
You do realize this is a common practice across many different markets(IE different governments)?  Foreign carmakers have to align with American safety regulations, which are at times overreaching.  They have to manufacture trucks in the USA or be subject to a 25% tax(chicken tax).  Phone manufacturers must comply with the FDA and FCC measures, which at times can be draconian.  There are so many examples.  But its simple, if a company wants to access the customers in that market, they have to play by the rules dictated by that market.  Look at all of the complaints about the 30% required to access the App Store, yet people comply with it because they want access to the customers.

While I am happy with the shift to USB-C, I personally don't like it being a regulation.  But you seemed unhappy that a foreign government is dictating access to a market, when the country you reside in does the exact same thing.

  • Apple Watch battery blowout sends man to emergency room

I have owned one of every generation of Apple Watch except one and have never seen this.
The older watches have often been given to friends and family that did not have one and all have been well behaved.

Not sure if they are adaptable to smaller devices but newer designs of battery (LFP) are pushing out the Lithium Ion battery in the Solar Generator, BEV and other markets because they have better life and tend to be safer.
Unfortunately if you manufacture enough products with Li-ion batteries, your eventually going to have some with a fault and a runaway thermal condition.

As far as LFP, I they still lag a bit in energy density vs lithium ion, which is important in small form factor devices.  Hopefully either a manufacturable solid state battery will be produced (relatively)soon, or the recent Lithium Sulphur advancements will lead to a manufacturable battery.  Either way, I am not sure how many people are willing to sacrifice 15-20% battery life for a slightly safer phone.

  • Long iPhone 14 Pro lead times hint at sky-high demand

I went to an AT&T store two Fridays ago and ordered the iPhone 14 Pro with terabyte storage and it showed up a week later last Friday.  Migration from my iPhone 11 Pro was seamless.

I’m blown away when I compare the camera lens sizes on the 14 Pro to the 11 Pro.  The iPhone 14 Pro camera lenses are huge!
I ordered my 14 pro from Tmobile, upgrading from the 11 as well.  I was slightly concerned about the move to an e sim, but Apple has apparently worked with the carriers to make it the easiest upgrade I have ever seen.  Literally just followed a few prompts and set up face id on the new device and everything was ready to go, it even deregistered my old phone from the Find My network.  Can't say enough about how easy they make upgrade process.
