  • macOS 12.3 update causing problems for some PCI-E GPU owners

I wonder if a PRAM reset would fix it.

It did not. After the NVRAM reset, a new run of GB5 gave 139955.  That's 87% of what it was under 12.2.1.

This is affecting not only eGPU but Mac Pro users as well who are making using of OEM AMD 5xxx and 6xxx GPUs rather than Apple's MPX based GPUs.

Right, that's what the article says.

FTA first paragraph: "Apple's update to macOS Monterey 12.3 is causing problems for handful of Mac users, with some PCI-E GPU cards not delivering the speed that they used to in not just eGPU enclosures, but in the Mac Pro as well."

Later on, FTA: "After checking with one contact, it was found that Apple's own W6900X MPX module worked fine in their Mac Pro, however, a Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT worked at about half-speed in the same system.

Further points of contact have said that their RX 6900 XT cards were functioning fine."

I'd sure like to know what is different about the RX 6900 XT users' configuration than mine! I did open a ticket with Apple support.

My Metal score is about half of what it was on 12.2.1.   iMac Pro, eGPU, AMD RX 6900 XT.
Come on Apple, this is ridiculous!

Edit: A second run yielded a Metal score of 133606, but still significantly less than the 160620 achieved on 12.2.1.

  • Leaked M1 Ultra Mac Studio benchmarks prove it outclasses top Mac Pro

As impressive as this is, (no flames here- I'm an exclusive Mac user)  you have to get to Page 388 on the Geekbench 5 CPU results to get to this result of 24055.  The Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 3800 MHz (24 cores) from October 2020 already beat the Ultra.  The single core results are outstanding, and this much horsepower in this form factor with so little power draw is very impressive.  The ASi "Mac Pro" will have a pretty high hurdle to climb with the AMD EPYC (128 cores) coming in at 75539 GB5 multi-core.

There are, of course, other factors to consider such as the unified memory, built in encoders/decoders, neural engine, etc.  All in all, a lot of bang for the buck.  All that said, my AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT eGPU (attached to my 5 year old iMac Pro) got a Metal GB5 score of 160166.  So they have another hill to climb in their ASi "Mac Pro" when it comes to graphics performance.

  • Apple's Mac Studio launches with new M1 Ultra chip in a compact package

At the end when he said we have one more but that’s for another day and said the Mac Pro… so this studio isn’t going to be their biggest powerhouse but merely a stepping stone.. What the hell will the new Mac Pro be packed with??
The speculation was the "Duo" (now formally called the Ultra) would be two M1 Max Chips in tandem. It stands to reason that the "Quad" that has been speculated will be in the Mac Pro.  The only question is which superlative are they are they going to use: "Ultra Ultra"?  "Super-duper"?  "Hyper"?
