    I noted that they mentioned more than a few times how much better things would be for those still on Intel Macs (rub it in, why don't ya!), and in particular, how the 24" iMac M3 was offered as a replacement for either the 21.5" or 27" Intel iMacs. I wonder if that means we won't see a larger iMac any time soon.

    They will be drawing a hard line to discontinue support for all Intel Macs in the near future. The remarks about the comparative boost is both marketing to convince people to upgrade from those and also a warning the the MacOS written to use that new speed and capacity will soon be too much for Intel Macs to handle. 
    Yep, that's what I'm afraid of...
      My very capable 2017 27" iMac has already been locked out of future OS upgrades like Sonoma.  

    With "Open Core Legacy Patcher," you can run Sonoma on your 2017.  Mine works just fine.

    It's quite obvious to me that this current machine is a stopgap product. The quad M2 or whatever they were going to call it apparently either didn't work or they couldn't get it to scale.  I'm sure their hope is that when the M3 becomes available, they can differentiate the Studio from the Pro.  They simply had to complete their "2 year transition" to ASi, and this was their placeholder to do just that.

    I just saw the M2 UItra Metal result on GB:  281,948,  which IS better than I can get with my eGPU, which gives me 191,426 on GB 6.1.   So I guess Apple has accomplished what I was hoping they would.

    Perhaps it's too early to write off the Mac Pro entirely. It's clearly a placeholder product. Here's a job description for a job Apple is currently trying to hire for:
    "As a GPU Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality, low-power graphics IP that meets our performance, timing, and area goals. You will explore design trade-offs, while employing rigorous design principles. Additionally, you will be required to understand and contribute to cutting edge microarchitectural specifications, while designing best in class GPUs. To accomplish this, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in architecture, validation, modeling, and physical design."

    Could you explain the statement "The reasons why for this are complex. It's not just about drivers -- Apple has decided that it didn't need a way for the Apple Silicon processor to talk to an external graphics card, at all, under any circumstances."?  If my 6-year-old Intel iMac Pro can talk to a graphics card over Thunderbolt 3, why can't an Apple Silicon-based Mac do the same?  I think it IS about drivers, and the fact that Apple doesn't want to work with either AMD or nVidia ever again. https://machow2.com/m1-mac-egpus/
