  • Apple axes Wi-Fi router division, apparently signaling the end of AirPort

When 802.11ax and 5G become actual things, Apple will move people onto this project. There is no point having experts sitting around not working on a product so they may as well be improving future products. These people haven't been fired.
This makes more sense. 11ax isn't even close to being ratified, there really isn't anything more you can do to improve on the devices, so why have the team working on that. I think this is a whole lot of hoopla over nothing people. No one got fired, they are just working on something different right now, probably all dealing with networking technologies while we wait for 11ax to come close to ratification.

Also, bear in mind, there is a whole lot of people who like using that ecosystem for their networking because it "just works". From Macs, to Phones, to Pads, and TVs; their system just works. Also, people do use AirPlay a whole lot, unless that has become open sourced, they will not get out of the networking business for that reason alone.

  • Developer Feral Interactive dishes on Apple Metal graphics pros and cons

    Apple should update Open GL.

Obviously, by not updating it Apple encourages development on Metal - which is better.
But bad for developers since it makes lot more work to support both ios and android.   Plus not updating  it creates ill will... Apple's hubris used to just be annoying, its been getting infuriating lately.
This article has nothing to do with Metal on iOS. Feral is specifically talking about Metal on Mac. And while it is a pain to have to support multiple architectures, sometimes you have to do that if you want to maximize your audience.

  • Possible Apple Lightning-to-headphone adapter for 'iPhone 7' spotted in new photos

The other problem that I see is one of the reverse direction. I use my EarPods on my MacBook Pro, which has a 3.5mm port but no Lightning port, and I don't see a way for Lightning EarPods (if they end up making them) to be converted to the 3.5mm standard.

  • Nintendo might build hardware controllers for iPhone and iPad

    moreck said:
I hope this is true! I've been saying for a long time that Nintendo should do this. It's a smart way to keep their brand relevant. They could release their old-school "Virtual Console" games on iOS, but make it so they only work with their controllers. Some people might balk at this, but the fact is that foisting controller-based games onto a touch interface is terrible. Since Nintendo values the customer experience as highly as Apple, forcing people to use their controllers will ensure a consistently solid playing experience.
I don't think that this will happen. Apple has very strict guidelines when it comes to controllers. First, the game must be able to operate without a controller. Secondly, the controller has to adhere to layouts for buttons and control sticks. Those two things may make Nintendo shy away from this, which is why I don't think this rumor will pan out.

  • Apple's differential privacy analyzes the group, protects the individual

Why mention that Google started using this data privacy technique first?  Why is it that everytime Apple innovates and implements new technology there's always  some stick in the mud that has to point that Google is already using it?
In this case it's simply the facts?
True. And has anyone ever heard of "Google Report Project" at all? I know I didn't until today.
