  • Apple slapped with class action suit over iPhone 5/5s data leakage

I had this issue & believe it to be real. My iPhone would display the wifi symbol & my podcasts would begin downloading, but later I would discover that the podcasts were downloading over cellular, not wifi. When I would turn the screen back on, I would see the 3G/4G symbol before it displayed the wifi symbol again. So in the mean-time podcasts continued to download over cellular while the screen was off. I could replicate the issue over and over. My iPhone burned through $600 of excess data in a couple of hours and I had to disable podcasts from downloading over wifi. I don't remember the exact version when the issue was fixed, but it was some iOS versions later. I had support calls with Apple and provided them with details of the issue, but never received compensation from them for the data loss, nor the time spent on the phone to them to provide information on how to replicate it. I know that there are a lot of lawsuits out there that are rediculous, but I was actually affected by this. I'm actually a software engineer & do know how to use my iPhone well, debug such situations, etc. I also follow my data usage to ensure that I don't go over. This was a situation that was truely out of my hands. The iPhone would display the wifi symbol & use data like it was on wifi, but it was switching to cellular when the screen was off, but still using data like it was on wifi. I'm not part of this lawsuit & I still own iPhones. Just saying that this was a real issue.
" This was a situation that was truely out of my hands. "  Not exactly: go into settings: cellular, and turn OFF "cellular data". That eliminates that entirely. Probably best to turn off "data roaming" as well.

"burned through $600 of excess data in a couple of hours" Now THAT I find incredible.

  • Proposed California rules would require self-driving Apple car to have human backup during testing

A human as the final arbiter is a reasonable criteria especially for testing. That's a difference as I understand it between Boeing and Airbus design philosophy and it's Airbus' aircraft that crash when their computers get boggled by iced over pitot tubes: Air France being the latest.

Autonomous is likely a ways down the timeline: but augmentation through advanced tech is already appearing and will continue to add safety to vehicle performance in the near future (one minor one, we're still using naked eyeballs at night? I want an IR display at the bottom of my windshield in a "heads up display" implementation showing me the FULL road ahead at night... ). LONG before anything like a fully autonomous vehicle even appears.

    Here we go again.

AAPL is getting hammered today. This is a great time to make a buy in my opinion.
"hammered"? It's down a little over 1% while the overall DOW is off 0.65. and NASDAQ is down 0.59

  • Apple Maps gains Los Angeles public transit data integration

10:11:2 (Maps version 2.0), no problem seeing LA Transit. Purp, Red, Blue, Expo, all listed with multiple arrival times (7th Street/Metro Center Station) and while the display only shows the rail lines the directions  on the map include BUS routes (one of the 4 selections available to choose in the "View" drop down menu)! And when I click on a bus stop along the route I get times.

NYC on my phone is a treat.

  • First look: Apple's lightweight 3.6oz Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6

I think I was just a little bit sick in my mouth. Apart from adding bulk and looking far from Apple's usual high-standards, it's surely an admission that the battery on the 6 and 6S are still woefully inadequate. I'd sacrifice having a thinner iPhone for 50% increase in battery - and even that wouldn't last me a full day at least a couple of times per week
Nope, just APPLE acknowledging that there are some fraction of users who might benefit from this accessory. Rather than burden 100% of their customers with something so easily solved for the few.

Though I think I'd still be more likely to choose one of the multiple charge carrying small battery packs for a simple external boost. Not that I've ever found that necessary with my 6/6s Plus.
