  • Apple exploring use of ear detection in future over-ear headphones

Automatically switching between right and left signals based on how the headphones are put on would be brilliant. No more need differentiate between L/R orientation. Can't tell you how many times throughout my life I've put my headphones on the wrong way. Makes even more sense with the AirPods.

  • Apple Watch Series 4 has smaller batteries than Series 3, official specs show

The watch is a joke if you want to use it as an outdoor tracker.

What can I do with 18hours? Is the 18 hours with GPS/altimeter tracker turned on?

Oh and does it work when temperatures drop bellow 0C?

I wish Apple would make an "outdoor" version with a battery life that lasts for few days.

SUUNTO Spartan can easily get 2 weeks on one battery charge, and if GPS tracker is used I can easily do two/three days.
    From the Spartan product pages:

Sport: Battery life 10h in training mode
Ultra: Battery life 18h in training mode

...not as rosey as you make it out to be, unless you start disabling features. Plus its honkin’ huge, which is why they never show it in side view.

    https://www.suunto.com/sports-watch-collections/Suunto-Spartan-Collection/

And that Spartan is a joke of a wireless iPod, a joke for digital payments, a joke for notifications, a joke for apps, a joke for ECG, etc etc..

    See the point?
No I do not see the point. I do not argue to your feature list but as an outdoor watch it is simply useless!

I use spartan ultra for 3 years now and when I go mountaineering or ski touring I can use it easily 3 days without charging and using GPS. If GPS is not used the watch will go easily 1-2 weeks without charging. I doubt Apple Watch can do that! Haven't tested it though...

Digital payments are useless in Europe for now.

Notifications are also useless in the backcountry because mostly there is no cell signal.

    Wireless iPod. Who needs that?

EGC is a neat feature that is again not working in EU.

I am not saying AWatch is a bad. Contrary. I see it as a good devie, but I wish apple would make a version with better battery to go at list few days without charging when you are in the backcountry.
How are digital payments useless in Europe? I used Apple Pay all over Europe this Summer...

  • Review: Apple Watch Series 4 is the full realization of what a wearable can and should do

“Full realization” might also include an alert when I leave my phone behind. Please?
Submit that as feedback. Not a watch wearer personally, but that is a great idea.
Hopefully a developer can create an app for this, if Apple won't.
Apple would have to allow it. I have to believe there is a reason why Apple hasn't incorporated this obvious technology. They eventually did with find my AirPods, after a third party developer created something that did the trick, but Apple wouldn't let him offer it. But this observation was made almost from day one of Series 0, and to date I don't think anyone's done anything about it ...

  • Hands on with Apple's ornate gold Milanese loop for the Apple Watch

I've stayed away from the woven bands simply because, being retired, I spend a lot of time outdoors working or in vigorous exercise and I could see all those little tiny loops becoming infested with sweat, dirt and grime.

So, I stick to the standard black/grey sports band -- and find that I even have to scrub it on occasion.

But that gold watch and gold band sure do look great.   If I were still working 60-70 hours work weeks as an analyst and consultant, I would be seriously considering one.
The nice thing about Apple's design is that it's quick and easy to change watch bands, something that almost nobody would do with other watches. Keep a Milanese for dress occasions, silicone for dirty work and something else for when you just feel like a change.
The only danger with that depends on what you do using the watch with the other bands. In college I had grosgrain bands that slid through the pins on my Seiko watch. I had a nice leather band that worked the same way for dressier occasions, and different fabric bands for casual and sports. Unfortunately, the latter two instances increased the chance the crystal and case would get scratched and dinged, and took on a grimy appearance, such that the nice leather strap looked out of place on the watch when I wore it to nicer events.

Based on that experience, I'd recommend anyone who wants to have a nicer watch for work/events, should have more than one watch to alternate for casual/sporting wear. At the height of my watch wearing days, I had 3 watches, one that I wore exclusively to formal events, and another nicer watch I alternated for work with a titanium watch I only wore for sports and casual wear.

Well, hopefully you’ll never lose your phone, break it, or have it stolen, or leave it behind. You don’t need to even activate the LTE service for it to be useful. My mom forgot her phone at home when she ran an errand one day, and of course that’s the day her car broke down, stranding her on the road, and having to seek out a phone to call a tow truck. It’s cheap insurance to have access to emergency services without even paying for a phone plan to otherwise use the calling and data features. A friend had his phone stolen while traveling and would have had a real problem if not for his LTE connected watch.
The cellular model costs $100 more than GPS only. Not a problem for me, although I'm not buying either, but if the only use for cellular is in a situation where you forgot your phone or it was stolen, it doesn't seem worth it. Not having your phone is not a "real problem", at least from a communication perspective. You just walk into any Walmart, 7 Eleven, or Verizon store and buy a cheap prepaid burner phone with minutes for less than $100. As far as being stranded with your car, perhaps you should consider a car with roadside assistance built in. Every car I've owned in the last 20 years had that service.
Well, if you forget your phone enough, dropping $100 every time you need to replace it for whatever reason could get expensive. A burner phone likely doesn't have access to any of your iCloud info, contacts, etc. and I'm not aware of any $100 burner iPhones. Also, if you chose to buy a new iPhone while on a trip, you'll need another device for two-factor authenitcation in order to access your iCloud info on the phone, and the Watch which requires the phone does not suffice. As for OnStar or other built-in services, well you're also paying for that, separately, or in the price of the car. My mother doesn't have that. Many people don't. So it's just a matter fo what solution works best for you. Anecdotally, we could likely go back and forth all day with scenarios where having a cellular watch would be advantageous, and you'd have an alternative that suits you better. To each his own. I know two specific situations where having the cellular AW made a big difference. I'm not saying that's enough for everyone, or even applicable to everyone, but it's something to consider, which the OP didn't seem to be.
