haven't tried it yet. does it do purchases? if not i can't imagine what the delay was other than trying to use their customers as pawns in a battle with apple....
Yeah, you have to wonder how much money they lost in potential Prime subscriptions with that spat-based decision. Doubtful they made up the difference in additional Fire TV sales.
To be fair, it was a business decision. The same kind of apparent short sighted business decisions Apple sometimes makes. Many here want to blame this delay on Amazon solely, when there were clearly technical hurdles Apple was addressing with the ATV 4K. Add to that the HD version Amazon released for the Gen 3 device, which was likely a port of a basic Android version, and probably existed long before they needed support for auto HDR, and frame rate matching. Apple has to push the ATV 3 version, so why not offer it to customers before the 4K version was ready? Likely Apple's business decision not to undermine the 4K box and push sales. People can believe what they want but it's unlikely Apple shares no blame here.
Right. With that logic Apple also shares the blame for not having Hulu and Netflix until now.
That doesn't even make sense in this context.

  • Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV beta testing by employees underway, release date still...

    Sept. 28?

im betting the app is dependant on the 11.2 update, which would explain why it's surfaced for beta testing only now.

Amazon has said they intend to offer the app on ATV 2 and 3, as well as the 4, so wing they likely could have already done, but as Apple would have to push those updates to the older boxes, I'm betting Apple doesn't want to do that without also offering the app on the ATV 4K.

  • Roundup: The best HDR TVs to pair with the Apple TV 4K

I appreciate the suggestions and comments on the 4K TV's best suited for the 4K Apple TV.  I plan on a 75" 4K for my "theater room" renovation.  I currently have a 7.1 Surround setup, and I'm toying with an 11.2 Dolby Atmos/ DTS-X configuration, as I believe that a great picture should be coupled with a great sound system.  I am only aware, that this new 4K Apple TV decodes a Dolby Plus 7.1, which would be unacceptable to me.  Does anyone know whether this new unit will pass through the other sound codecs, which are far more prevalent in today's content?  ie.... DTSHD-MA 7.1, Dolby TrueHD 7.1, and then Dolby Atmos and DTS-X.  For the new Apple TV 4K to be considered a "high end unit", to be included in high end theater setups, I feel it must support more than DD Plus 7.1.
Apple has said ATMOS is coming. More disturbing to me is that the TV doesn't pass through a native picture, forcing every signal into a fixed output, defaulting to 4K HDR, applying a fake HDR/DV image regardless of whether the native source is encoded for it or not. It also upscales the source based on the fixed output rather than letting your TV do it. In the case of 940E, the TV 4K is inferior, in order to select the appropriate native output for each source, to get the best image, you have to go through 10-14 steps to switch back and forth. That's far more important to me than sound, even though I recognize the importance of both to a premium home theater experience. But I bought my Sony 900E for the superior viewing experience, and now Apple has rendered that moot, or at a minimum incredibly inconvenient to attain.

Why would there be specs and pic of an upcoming phone in the firmware of an upcoming homepod speaker? Sound fishy to me.
The weird thing about a piece of Apple kit is that it knows everything about every other piece of Apple kit when you switch it on.
A feature that is paid for in the amount of storage and RAM the firmware and OS must occupy -- and the reason until recently, most Apple apps couldn't be deleted from a device even if they weren't being used ...
