  • Apple Vision Pro vs Meta Quest heatsets - how the approaches compare

I think it's really not that helpful to compare the Meta headsets to the Apple Vision Pro.  From what I saw, despite the inclusion of home use in the keynote, they aren't intended for the same markets.  At least not right now.  I'd suspect that the AVP is instead competition for the Vario XR3, or HoloLens, both of which are in the same price range.

There might in the future be a version of Apple's headset more targeted at consumer use, but this one is, IMO, aimed squarely at professional use.

  • All the Apple subreddits set to go dark in protest of Reddit's API charges

    Good luck with that.
Did you not read the story either?

The issue isn't with Reddit charging for access, it's to do with the pricing being set so high as to make third party applications untenable, despite assuring those developers for months that everything would be reasonable.  And then cutting off communication and slandering those third party developers (of Apollo) in interviews, and doubling down when the recording proved that you lied.

Reddit's management have behaved atrociously here, and the protests are being held by Reddit's users, not the developer of Apollo, who was not complaining publicly at all until he was slandered.

But sure, support the big corporation shitting on one of the developers who helped enrich their platform, raising its popularity.  They're the real victims, right?

I read the article.  Your argument boils down to the same "30% is too much and isn't fair" that Apple gets for the App Store.

  • Up close and hands on with Apple Vision Pro at Apple Park

At first I thought, good, I only use glasses for reading, not distance. So I shouldn’t need the Zeiss add-ons. Then I thought, wait, you’re not REALLY looking in the distance—just virtually. You’re really looking at something (a tiny screen) about an inch away from your eye. How can anybody focus on that? Guess I’ll have to wait for a try-on/fitting session at my local Apple Store next year to find out whether I’ll need the lenses or not. Wondering how much they’ll add to the cost.
I have the same problem, and it probably is going to cost the same as getting a new pair of glasses, however, I did notice some of the You Tubers, who got a chance to use the Vision pro wore glasses and had to take them off to test out the system.

There are companies now that make prescription inserts for every major headset, and a few of the minor ones.  They almost all cost less than $100.  If Apple's cost significantly more than that, it will be because Apple has made it technically or legally hard to duplicate, so they don't have to worry about competition.  Unless there is something about such an insert that is patentable (I honestly don't know), I fully expect one of the existing companies to be producing inserts even before the device is released.

  • Vision Pro prescription lenses to start at $300, guesses Gurman

Given that there are multiple companies right now making prescription inserts for all major headsets for less than $100 (much less if all you want is the prescription, and none of the other stuff some of them offer), and that there didn't to be anything special about the Apple headset that would preclude a non-Apple product (many of the existing ones already use magnetic couplers), $300-600 seems...excessive.

So that leads me to one of three major suppositions:
    • Gurnman is an idiot who didn't do any kind of market research before making this claim, and Apple will price them competitively.
    • Apple is too stupid to have already read the market.
    • Apple is doing the "Apple Thing" and supposing that people will pay extra just for the Apple name.
I'll provisionally go with the first.
First supposition.  A person can pick up a good quality prescription lenses for $300 on the low end, but these are individually cut to a unique frame.  These lenses will all be the same shape, so they should be able to be efficiently produced.
The lens inserts for my Valve Index were $80 for the pair.  I got a couple of additional add-ons, so if one didn't want those, they would be less.  Mine too are "individually cut to a unique frame."
