  • iPhone replacement cycles slowing down to four years, pose threat to services, analyst say...

4 years replacement cycle sounds unreasonable. People go at most 2 1/2 to 3 years most.
The thing is, for me at least, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. Yes the screen is nicer, but it has reached the point of diminishing return. Yes the cameras are better, but my almost three year old SE still takes great shots. My SE still runs the latest iOS and gets all the features. I look at the iPhone XS and it is lovely, but I keep asking myself what it would give me that my SE doesn't. So far the hole in my bank account doesn't outweigh the improvements. Until the SE stops working, or at least won't do something I want it to do, I have no compelling reason to upgrade.
The SE's camera is pretty mediocre compared to what comes in the latest iPhones. OSS is amazing for video on my X. Screen real estate is certainly a big plus for me as well, I can't image having to read stuff on a 5" screen anymore.
Again we are talking diminishing returns, the iPhone XS has pretty close to the perfect camera(within the physical limits of a cell phone), but compared to the SE, its camera is still considered average in todays standards, and in any case they are much better than the cheap digital cameras that people had to buy separately from their phones 10-20 years ago, which were perfectly acceptable for a generation of people.

Also screen size is subjective, but the XS Max certainly has the big screen covered, while if you want a 4 inch iPhone, there is and won't be a SE successor.

I know I'm in that boat. I would have considered an upgrade at 3 years if prices were the same, but they aren't so I'm keeping my 6S+. Also with the news that 5g is around the corner in 2020, I might as well wait 5 years assuming it continues to run smooth.

  • Apple rumored to sell Apple TV 4K, HomePod at cost

This is interesting if true, the HomePod is still a flop costing 3 times as much as some of its competitors, with Siri lacking well behind on it. AirPods seem to be popular, but I still think Apple is looking into lower cost versions, but they are likely years away. The Apple TV is great hardware, but since smart TVs are everywhere, the device needs to be marketed as a ps4pro/xbox one s competitors at half the prices, which they need AAA games ported to iOS to match, with ideally USB C external drive support to download the massive files (and the lack of a port on the gen 5 tv doesn't help).

  • Kuo: Rocky road ahead for iPhone, but leveling off in second half of 2019

There is one clear way to handle this problem: Release a new iPhone worth the price, and the killing of the SE was one foot in the door, as there will be no SE 2 or whatever coming in March, so they won't have sales growth again until September or later, and that depends on if the iPhone XI and XIR are a substantial upgrade.

  • Surviving the most technologically advanced trade show solely on USB-C was a nightmare

Considering USB C is now 4 years old, this is not good news. The fact that Macs are one of the very few devices still being sold with multiple usb c ports helps make this worse. I guess the best solution is to have a usb A power strip and use a handful of usb A to USB C power cables.
