  • With Apple abandoning AirPort, here are the best alternative Wi-Fi routers for Mac users

So what do we use to stream music to speakers now and what do we use for Time Machine backups?
My home theatre receiver supports AirPlay. I can stream right to it, even when it's in low power standby mode. For TM backups, I've been using a 3TB USB 3.0 WD MyBook plugged into a USB 3.0 port on my Synology DS1812+ for the last several years. I've never used my AirPort Extreme 5th gen for any of that stuff.

Those trees look surprisingly thicker than I was expecting. That's odd.

  • Apple SSD in Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro fixed to motherboard, not removable

I tend to use my laptops for six years before replacing them. My first-gen MBP is being used by my twelve-year-old for homework. A SSD has a limited lifespan. This is (sort-of) okay with a tablet or a phone, but I'm looking at spending over $3,000 on the new MacBook Pro early next year (to replace my early-2011). I'm highly unlikely to do spend that kind of cash on a machine that Apple is now considering disposable when a part wears out.
They wear out only after several hundreds of terabytes of writes. See
    http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead

Even if it was removable, you wouldn't want to replace it because these SSDs have an Apple controller and they run on NVMExpress and not on SATA-3 like the rest of the industry. Apple is the first to implement NVMExpress SSDs. SATA-3 SSDs are limited to 300-400 MB/s. NVMExpress peaks at 2-3 GB/s. If any PC maker launches a laptop with NVMExpress next year, you can bet that it will cost you much more than that $3000 you're willing to spend.
FYI, there are currently lots of PC-based laptops that have NVMe drives in them.

You can search this page for "NVMe" to get a list:

    http://laptopmedia.com/laptop-m-2-ngff-ssd-compatibility-list/
    The majority are SATA.

Apple is the first in NVMExpress with the Retina Macbook.
You said, "If any PC maker launches a laptop with NVMExpress next year."

I corrected you. There have already been PC laptops with NVMe out for at least the past several months, if not longer, not "next year".

It's not an "Apple vs PC" statement I'm making here like you seem to be implying. It's simply correcting a fallacy that you're apparently trying to propagate for some weird reason.

  • How Donald Trump's election as U.S. President could affect Apple

I cancelled my $3.5K MacBook Pro order because of what happened last night. I don't think I can afford it right now, not knowing what the future holds. I hope that I'm wrong. I hope that a President Trump acts responsibly. I hope that a President Trump won't cause a trade war. However, at this point, I do not know.
If you cancel your 3.5K MacBook Pro because of your perceived uncertainty about the future, this has little to do with Trump. You should never have spent 3.5K on a laptop, and you finally realized it. You should thank Trump for it. If you need a MacBook Pro, buy a 2015 model. It's a great laptop, and you will save at least 50%. At one pint, folks need to come to their senses and realize that using debt to finance one's lifestyle is a bad idea. It's bad for an individual, for a family, and for a country. Let the rich buy those $4K laptops and $10,000 gold watches. You will be just fine getting a MacBook Pro for under $2,000 and a watch for under $500. You will stil be the envy of 95% of the world population.
I like to wait until I get to 5 or 6 pints before I come to my senses.

  • Apple cuts prices on USB-C & Thunderbolt 3 gear in response to MacBook Pro backlash

HASPs are dongles, but not all dongles are HASPs.

Dongles can be adapters, HASPs, or basically anything that can be plugged in to add functionality that would otherwise be absent.
