  • Airbnb hires Jony Ive to design next-gen products and services

    Beats said:
Airbnb makes physical products? I had no idea. I thought their only product was an app which was an interface to their service of connecting short-term tenants with home owners.  I’m a little stumped as to what Ive will be working on. Does anyone have an idea?

It also says he’ll be working on services. Again, what sort of service requires an industrial designer?

Ummm this is for future products and Jony designs software too.
Not only that, but design, and especially Industrial Design, is as much about the process of design as it is about simply designing the things. My guess is that the scope of his involvement with Airbnb will go much deeper than just designing some icons and thank you cards.

Ive was the one who tended to get the credit, but Jobs was the one making all the decisions on design. Good riddance.
Jobs decided what design of Ive's made the cut.  If Jobs didn't like a design, Ive would redesign it to facilitate the change.  Nothing wrong with that.  Not sure why the hate.
Exactly. Design isn’t one way. It’s a back and forth. It’s twisted around and shaped to perfection over time with many, many people involved. To think it was one guy saying “do it this way!” and then out it popped, is pretty out of touch.

  • Apple seemingly discontinues Apple TV 'Remote' app

Maybe I’m missing something? How does Control Center do everything that iTunes remote did? Control Center is literally just play/pause volume, right? I use remote weekly; unless there are more features on newer phones or something I will miss this app. But I guess since I already have it it will continue to work for the foreseeable future.

  • Samsung 'Galaxy S21' design and January 2021 launch leaked

So.. does this have face recognition “security”? If it does I’m assuming it’s just the 2D optic kind that can be fooled by a photo?

  • Compared: iPhone 12 mini versus iPhone 11 versus iPhone SE

Apple doesn't get it do they? The iPhone "mini" is still huge. Why do they feel the need to shove giant iPhones down our throats?

We've wanted a 5s-sized or even a 5s SCREEN-sized iPhone for years! Not something a few millimetres smaller than iPhone 6.

I get it, I’m right there with you. I checked the dims and iPhone 12 is just over 1/4” taller, and just under 1/4” wider than the 5/5s/SE design, and three tenths of a mm thinner..! Is it as small as we all had hoped? No, no it is not. But it’s not that much bigger in size, but the screen is FAR bigger. Not that I care tons about that, but it is pretty cool. I’m eager to get my hands on one to see how much bigger it really feels.
