  • Corning unveils Gorilla Glass 5, evolutionary successor for iPhone screens

    linkman said:
I have dropped mine to a hard surface about 5 times over 4 years and have yet to get a crack or dent -- but I use some sort of protective case. All of my 4 immediate family members use cases and have yet to have such a failure. Use a case!
Problem with your anecdotal report is that you didn't try dropping your phone without a case.  It might have survived your drops just as well without the case. Scientific studies are properly controlled. Yours was not.  (I'm still totally glad your phone didn't break, I'm just saying that there's no evidence that your case is responsible for saving it.)

  • Groundbreaking 'atomic memory' could cram unimaginable amounts of data into your iPhone

This will be expensive considering how Apple charges $100 for a 16GB upgrade.
I guess you don't remember paying $300 for a 30MB SCSI drive back in 1989.
    I do.
The equivalent of $160,000 for 16GB of storage back then.
I think I still have it, with a copy of System 7.6 on it.
Of course, we could also boot our Mac and run software on a single 800kB diskette.

  • Safari 10 brings fast, native App Extensions to the macOS browser, web content

How the heck do I find Safari 10?  App store doesn't list it, and apple's website doesn't mention it.  I'm running the latest version of El Cap.
    Paid developers only.
Thanks, tallest skil.  AppleInsider should have said so in the story, instead of using the headline and leading paragraph that deceives the reader into thinking this is an actual product available now, rather than just something in development.  Pffft.

So is Safari 10 available for download?  The article keeps switching from present tense to future tense and back again, so it's unclear.  It says it's for Sierra and ElCapitan, but doesn't actually say if this is a beta or something available NOW.

  • iPhone marketshare dips to 14.8% amid tougher Chinese competition, Gartner says

So where is Gartner's analysis for PROFIT-SHARE?  Because that's what matters in the phone business.  Back when there was a large platform-dependent battle of standards going on in the PC industry, then market-share mattered, because dominance determined the standard, which in turn determined the applications that were available, and your ability to share documents among co-workers.  Such things are less relevant in the smartphone business, because no matter the marketshare, few are making profit on applications other than those coding for iOS, and sharing of documents is not an issue.  That leaves just the sale of the phone hardware, and market-share is not a stand-in for profit-share in that sector.

Market-share truly is a bigger issue in commodity products.  But smartphones aren't commodities. Very few people refer to their iPhone as a "smartphone", but most white-box owners call their devices "smartphones" because they tacitly acknowledge that it is a wholly different product.

So, again, what are the figures for profit-share, huh?
