  • Apple Maps may add AR view highlighting the route ahead while driving

There is an Android app - while not exactly AR, that use the windscreen as a HUD for displaying driving info when the handset is placed on the dashboard. I’ve been looking for the iOS version or similar without much luck.
Speedometer 55 GPS in the App Store might meet your needs.

You would use all your data allocation is 1 hour under 5G. Apple need to become a carrier.
Why do you say that? If it takes you all month to use your data now, it will take you all month to use the same data on 5G. But each download will be faster - not more!

  • Editorial: How AirPods and Shortcuts shifted Apple's Siri story and blunted Amazon's Alexa...

I find Siri to be largely useless - I only use it to respond to texts while driving, and (literally) 90% of texts I try to send contain errors. I have an English accent, and it improves slightly if I fake an American accent, but it’s still garbage. If it can’t even get the simple stuff correct, I have no desire to try to use it for more complex activities. My echo on the other hand is phenomenally good at understanding me - I pretty much only use it for playing music, but it’s great. There is only one reason Siri isn’t dead, and that’s the size of the install base. In all other respects, Siri is far far behind, so much so that apple should be embarrassed, and whoever is in charge of that group should be fired.
So, you use Siri to keep you and others safe as you drive.  Siri, in a noisy car, misunderstands some of the words you say but you keep using it.  Echo on the other hand can do complex things, play a song.

I use Siri in my car via Car Play to listen to my text messages and respond, get directions to a destination, play music, answer and make phone calls.  My eyes stay on the road and my hands on the steering wheel.  And my vehicle is a pickup, not the quietest of environments.  My HomePod, iPad and Watch do most of these things while I am at home.

I admit that I have not tried Echo for anything so I can not compare them, only relate my experiences.

  • Apple says Spotify 'wants all the benefits of a free app without being free'

To be fair, Spotify has little choice but to use the App Store, it's not as if you can distribute iOS apps to consumers in any other way. Apple would have a point if Spotify could just put the IPA up on their website for users to download, but they can't.
To be fair, Spotify has the choice to not use the App Store. Apple is only about 20% of the smartphone world thus Spotify is complaining about the cost of doing business with a subset of that user base. I suspect that the problem is with the revenue generated by the small subset of users is far greater than the larger set of non-Apple users. If Spotify raised the cost of their services to cover Apple’s “Tax” and offered such a compelling service that the users would gladly pay the cost or change their phones to non-Apple phones, then the problem would be solved. From what I have read, Spotify users prefer the service over Apple Music. I have no firsthand knowledge of Spotify service. So, I suspect that the preference doesn’t extend to relinquishing an iPhone for the difference in cost. It seems to me that Spotify is complaining that it costs too much to have customers that are willing to pay.

  • Apple's 2020 iPhones expected to use 5nm 'A14' TSMC chips

I don’t understand why people in 2019 are buying $1100 iPhone XS Maxes ,where a larger iPad 10’ costs only $330.
Can people in the comment section help me understand?
I am 78 years old and my eyes and hands have difficulty with smaller screens that are harder to read and compressing icons into smaller space.
