  • Apple's Federighi and Joswiak discuss Apple silicon, iOS 14, Big Sur and more

I can understand the emphasis on power for laptops.  I am not so sure desktops. Of course these Apple silicon probably would be great in Data centers.

If they can make the chips more powerful and cheaper than intel then Apple could win a lot of market share without sacrificing profits.

Apple Silicon = touch based Macs?
Seems obviously simple.  They will have a common architecture and will be able to use all inputs on apps because they will come over with Catylist.

I remain skeptical. Not because I don't think Apple can pull this off. They've done it 2x before so clearly they can. Consumers probably won't notice any difference other than better battery life, etc. Will large corporations buy any laptop that doesn't have an x86 compatible processor? Clearly they buy lots of iPhones and iPads so perhaps. Fortunately for Apple the Mac is a small portion of their overall revenue so the risk is relatively small. Especially compared to their last major transition when Mac was the majority of their revenue. This is a multi-year adventure so it will be interesting to follow Apple's progress.
If Apple can then sell more computers for less money but with the same high profits corporations and people will scarf them up.

Yeah, but unfortunately many of the elderly people at the most risk are not comfortable with tech or can't even to put it on or manage the routine charging responsibilities.
Yes, that is true. Some older people in my own family are totally clueless about tech.

I guess that it's up to those who are more tech savvy to set up the devices for the older people in their family and show them how to use it with the least amount of hassle/effort.
That's true.   My departed dad fell and broke his hip just like in those commercials.    He never like technology stuff and didn't want to carry even an old flip-phone.    But I expect that as those in their 60's age now they won't have any problem with technology.    The guy in the story was in his 90's.

If Apple will end the monopoly on iOS app sales they can charge whatever they want for their app store.  All they have to do is let us load apps from wherever we choose.

If they won't do it willingly, then they need antitrust regulators to force them to do it.
Last thing I want is any change in Apple's control of what's on the hardware.    That protection is the reason why I'm will to keep using Apple with it's crappy Siri versus the Google Assistant.   But what the government should be doing is imposing at least 50% tariffs on electronics manufactured in China.   Trump was pretty much a failure there.
