  • Cydia, the 'original iPhone App Store' is suing Apple over antitrust claims

I remember well the heyday of Cydia. A lot of close friends with a shit eating grin on their face over some $1.99 apps they had stolen.

Cydia was a legitimate app store in the same sense as the Rolex sales representative you used to find at every street corner.

  • Apps face App Store expulsion by not complying with new ad-tracking rules

You have to give it up to Apple leadership. Most companies facing the scrutiny currently over Apple would have rolled up and shown their belly. But Apple is pushing through.

That is not hard to rationalize: we are the customers, that keep Apple afloat, and we want tracking to stop—mostly because it has proved useless in providing any meaningful advertising, in my experience.

We supplied Apple its deep pockets that allow them to flip the bird to other billion dollar companies that want a free ride in our backs, our data plans, and our battery lives.

Most consumers are unaware of how data heavy and power consuming ad tracking is. In the web, research has shown that up to 90% of downloaded data is just JavaScript, mostly dedicated to tracking you, at a significant impact to battery life!

  • Apple forced to include charger with iPhone in Sao Paulo

Alternative viewpoint; Brazil's government has a very poor standing as far as protecting the environment and reducing emissions or waste.  Excerpt from an article on the subject:

    • Between March and May 2020, the government of Jair Bolsonaro published 195 infralegal acts — ordinances, normative instructions, decrees and other measures — which critics say are an indirect means of dismantling Brazil’s environmental laws and bypassing Congress. During the same period in 2019, just 16 such acts were published.
    • In April, 2020 Environment Minister Ricardo Salles suggested that the administration “run the cattle” which experts say, within the context Salles used the phrase, is a euphemism for utilizing the COVID-19 crisis as a means of distracting Brazilians from the administration’s active undermining of the environmental rule of law.
    • A partial study of the 195 acts has found that they, among other things, allow rural landowners who illegally deforested and occupied conserved areas in the Atlantic Forest up to July 2008 to receive full amnesty for their crimes. Another change pays indemnities to those who expropriated properties within federal conservation units.
    • Shifts in administration management responsibilities have also resulted in what experts say is a weakening of regulations granting and managing national forests, and the relaxation of supervision over fisheries that could allow increased illegal trafficking in tropical fish. A study of the repercussions of all 195 acts is continuing.
I have a question: are you Brazilian or lived here for any period of time? I think not. Our national environment policies are indeed deplorable, no question about that. Also yes, we did elect a dipshit as president, but I don’t think most people on this forum can hold this against us.

As for the state o São Paulo (translated from Portuguese to Saint Paul, no idea where Sao Paolo came from), its policies are on the opposite side of the spectrum from federal ones. Besides, the Consumer Protection Agency here is truly independent, and is just following laws that does protect uninformed (or misinformed) costumers, specially those with more money than brains.

And I can’t find fault on the reasoning from the agency. I have yet to see Apple break down the numbers about the environmental impact. I do believe there is a positive effect, but when you have to argue over laws, we do need to see the specifics, to strike the best balance about environmental concerns and consumer rights.

  • Windows on Apple Silicon is up to Microsoft, says Craig Federighi

Why would Microsoft want to embarrass themselves (and their ARM devices) by allowing Windows on an M1 MacBook that will massively outperform their own devices?
Because after monkey boy left the helm at Microsoft, it became a much more services focused company. And it would be in their best interest to offer “Windows as a Service” to the broadest user base possible.

But that may be pointless, except for very few use cases. Most Mac users never bothered with Boot Camp or virtualization software. macOS is THE reason I bought a Mac!

  • Apple execs talk M1, chip specs versus real-world performance in interview

    cloudguy said:
I have no idea why I didn't realize this before. The Apple M1 chip is crushing the Intel chips it replaced because:

MacBook Air: dual core Intel Core i3 versus seven core Apple M1
Mac Mini: quad core Intel Core i5 versus octacore Apple M1
    MacBook Pro: see Mac Mini

    https://www.extremetech.com/computing/317304-benchmark-results-show-apple-m1-beating-every-intel-powered-macbook-pro

Now when we compare octacore chip versus octacore chip the results get interesting.

    M1: 1687 single-core and 7433 multi-core
    Intel Core i7: 1149 single-core and 7329 multi-core

Keep in mind: this is a 5nm chip versus a 14nm one. What is going to happen when Intel releases 10nm octacore chips? Or 7nm ones? 10nm Intel hexacore and octacore CPUs will arrive in 2021. So, right now Apple's advantages are primarily due to achieving an octacore low power low heat design. When Intel gets to 7nm - which they could do as early as 2022 by getting TSMC and Samsung to manufacture the chips - they will have the same.
Are you really serious? This smells like troll bait...

Why indeed look carefully for what Apple put to market now? Intel may offer something similar in 2 years time! It’s not like Intel has been walking back its proposed roadmap for years now, have it?
