I think any hardware announcements would be incidental and might even happen in a press release before the actual event. It's a little too commercial for Apple to directly hawk selling their new hardware at an education focused event. Probably something more along the lines of - Look at these wonderful Swift development tools for education and oh, it just happens that we have this wonderful new hardware to support it in the classroom.

Maybe I’m late to the game, but anyone else notice in the Apple Store App if you touch the Apple right above the “We’ve got something special in store for you”, the Apple will move around on the screen with your finger? Things you find out while the clock slowly counts down...

The roof is just one story tall at the plaza level and the store goes down for a second level with big windows over looking the river. This could easily be seen even as people walk or drive over the Michigan Ave bridge which would be higher than the roof.
