Android software and hardware has also had a major influence on iOS, from multitasking to notifications, NFC/mobile payments, voice commands, device size, etc.  

You make a good point and I would mention Palm here as well.

Palm laid much groundwork for the future of smart devices as we now know them. As did the Newton for that matter.

Everyone has clearly lifted ideas and implementations from each other over the decades. Cards - Palm, Window Shade - Android, Grid of icons - well that goes back quite a while by now. We should all know by know that absorbing the best ideas and implementations is the best way to go. 

I would say Apple has easily influenced the smartphone market more than most. But they have and will continue to lift good ideas from others.

The benefit has been to us, as consumers. As well as to a few gigantic multi-national corporations. I guess I don't mind a bit either way. Just keep delivering better products and I won't mind.

If a car company comes up with a better crumple zone that saves lives, or better seat belts, gas mileage etc., and another car company implements it, I honestly don't mind and don't see what all the fuss is about. The planet is better off with better and safer cars, as well as all devices in general.

One can scream and shout about theft of IP, the R&D money wasted for nothing, and on and on. But the world is a better place with the best thing for consumers. Even if only one company came up with an idea or implementation of something, do we really want that single company to hold all of the cards?

Otherwise how in the world are we ever going to get off this rock?

By fighting over something so silly as smartphones? I think not.

The more I read the comments on these boards the more I think this is absolutely a religion to people. It's possibly the most important thing to them in the world.

They would rather see some one else suffer than to see a better world for everyone else.

I WISH I could write code. I really do, altho it seems other than the better ones coders don't get much respect or pay anymore as I've seen from some comments. Anyway if you'd follow the link I offered rather than formulating your next  attempt to simply ridicule (for what purpose?) you might find it was more than a simple empty placeholder even in the original API1. What do you see, you're obviously much much smarter than I am, especially so when it comes to stuff like this.

That being said, I am sure her French is far more superior than my own.

That Apple both did everything they could AND say there are other outfits who may have better luck retrieving any data, is a mighty fine gesture in an otherwise tragic series of events.

Even thought most people who comment here may be familiar with most of Apples line-up, these kinds of comparison videos are helpful for average people who may not always have time to visit an Apple Store.

This technology stuff is pretty much a religion these days. Replete with wishing death upon your enemies. For "us" to win "they" must lose and "we" won't stop until "they" are dead and gone.

The schadenfreude among the various camps of fans of technology is startling to me. And yes, to use your phrase, it gives me a a bit of unease in the pit of my stomach - mainly about humanity in general.

It's not enough to have ones own personal preferences and enjoy ones own purchases and decisions. If someone thinks a different product or service serves them better then the they must be attacked or at least ridiculed!

Maybe we should start an actual war and kill each other over cell phones and email clients. Attack each other like drunken hooligans on the street. Now I came here to kick some ass and drink some beer, it's too bad you like Chevy and I'm all outta beer! 

I suppose I am glad for things like these kinds of forums, which seem to give a place to vent. But the fact that people get so worked up in the first place about this stuff will never cease to amaze me.

For me sports is another good analogy. As much as I want to see my team win, what I really want to watch the most is a great game.
