iPhone 16e review three months later: Still a great value with few compromises
endorphinity said:AppleInsider said:iPhone 16e long-term review: Two missing features
I do realize the position I'm in here, coming from an iPhone 16 Pro. That's not an upgrade path users follow.
If you are upgrading to an iPhone 16e from an iPhone 11 or from an Android device, you aren't going to miss these features. Because you never had them in the first place.
Perhaps that's the real angle Apple is counting on.
I'm also a 16 Pro owner whose wife was issued a black 16e by her company and I would second nearly all of Mike's positive commentary about this phone. It wasn't until I got to see, hold and use a 16e for myself that I could appreciate how well Apple succeeded here. And it finally delivers on being a true black, all-black phone that iPhone fans have been clamoring for since the iPhone 7--I think the black 16e is best looking iPhone out there. Is it a phone for me? It would be were it not for the single lens camera--a multiple lens camera system is essential for me. But we all have our non-negotiables in a phone.
The only critique of Mike's with which I would somewhat disagree is the lack of MagSafe. The vast majority of people put their iPhone in a case anyway, and a MagSafe case will solve most of this problem. No, you don't get 25W charging, but even Apple's latest MagSafe phones only get that from Apple's own MagSafe puck, a $39 option, plus you'll need a 30W charger. Otherwise, even the latest MagSafe phones are limited to Qi2 speeds of about 15W. Yes, the 16e will only do 7.5 watts with a MagSafe case, but that's perfectly fine for overnight charging, which people are going to do anyway, It's only if you need a big boost of power quickly that you'll want to plug in via USB-C.
It's also no secret that a major goal of the 16e is to get people using older iPhones to finally upgrade and to attract new switchers from Android--goals at which the iPhone SE had failed. It's increasingly difficult to persuade people to upgrade when they feel their "old" phone does everything they need it to do. By offering a pretty close equivalent of the latest iPhone 16 at a price reduction of $200, Apple may have found the right feature/price point formula to be persuasive (or not), and perhaps we'll hear some comments about that when Apple next reports earnings in July. They will have a full quarter of sales data by that time, and If Apple chooses not to comment at all about the 16e, then saying nothing would be saying a lot.

Trump may have added 25% iPhone tariff specifically to punish Tim Cook
Yeah, Tim was kinda busy figuring out how the hell he's going to manufacture and price products that deliver 3 months from now in the midst of this a-hole malignant narcissist's on again, off again, changed again, whim-of-the-minute tariff insanity. Nothing says "America First" like a serial bankruptcy artist punishing one of the greatest American business success stories ever. It is only "Trump First," always and forever. The problem right now is that none of the damage from this lunacy is visible to Americans... YET. No inflation uptick. No increase in unemployment. No small American businesses going bust. So the kind of idiots who think foreign countries pay our tariffs and send checks to the treasury are sitting around thinking, "See? It's all working!" The punishment from this stupidity can't get here soon enough. -
Tim Cook tried to kill Texas App Store age verification bill by calling the governor
OH PLEASE!!! Texas, the state that did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the wake of the Uvalde massacre of schoolchildren to prevent another one from happening now wants to make sure children are protected from what lurks at Apple's App Store?! Why not just do what they did after the massacre, offer "thoughts and prayers" and call it a day? This level of disgusting hypocrisy--where the slaughter of children with bullets that literally blow their bodies apart is just "something we have to live with," but they have to be protected from an app store--makes me want to vomit.
Controls exist for parents to lock their children out of downloading inappropriate content on Apple iPhones, iPads and Macs. And for parents too lazy or illiterate to read how to do it, there are YouTube videos to walk you through the process. If parents are too lazy to do either one, how concerned are they really about what their children download? Apple gave you the necessary controls to exercise your responsibility as a parent in the way you see fit--it's not their problem if you choose not to use them. -
Trump's 25% smartphone tariff starts just in time for the iPhone 17
sighting said:Oh no what would one of the richest most profile companies in the world do? How about stop using cheaper labor and move manufacturing back to the country that buys 40% of your products and oh wait makes 12% less profits.. I don't know how people are not pressuring companies like Apple to focus on the people instead of the profits.. I blame the Stockmarket. I t made us forget why we do what we do. -

BUT... this is what continues to astonish me with Trump. He will screw over anybody including, as we see here, some of his biggest fans who paid millions for this dinner--he didn't even stick around to pose for photos. And yet people keep sacrificing money, careers and reputations to throw themselves at his feet, only to find that they, too, get kicked to the curb when their usefulness to Trump runs out. How do people STILL not see who this malignant narcissist and con man is and has been his entire life?
