  • OWC unveils new version of pocket-sized Envoy Pro mini SSD

    While we see published speeds for this device making it look good, real world speeds for small USB flash drives often don't come anywhere close to that. Try and write 200 GB to it -- you'll see thermal throttling take the speed way down from the peak advertised speed. Until vendors can significantly cut down on the heat being generated by the circuitry larger form factors are going to be much faster for heavy activity. You'll sacrifice speed for portability. The small form factors are good for low read/write activity or if you are fine with large file transfers taking a long time.

  • Apple's tvOS 15.4 update arrives with support for joining captive WiFi networks

    The fix for captive networks is years late -- it should have been addressed a long time ago. Companies started to put a little browser on devices just to get through network access dialogs something like 20 years ago. The failure for ATV to have this burned me on a trip several years past.

    Why can't we have a simple light switch/dimmer?  Is it just me or aren't these the #1 use case for automation devices??????
    A reasonable number of these exist for HomeKit, and Eve also offers at least one: https://www.apple.com/ios/home/accessories/#section-switches ;

  • Over 6.5 million terabytes of flash storage ruined because of contamination at factory

    "Factory contamination ruins 6.5 million terabytes"
    You mean 6.5 EB. See how much "ink" I saved you.
    Almost all drives are now sold in terabytes
    I'll have to disagree. Most devices, including plenty of Apple's laptops, are listed with capacities ending in "GB." Examples: iPhone 13 Pro lists four sizes, 128 GB. 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. The least expensive MacBook Air shows 256 GB, configurable to 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB. Dell's XPS 13 laptop has three sizes -- only one of which is listed in TB. Dell lists their XPS 8950 desktop with half of the single drive options in GB.

    I think most hard drives are listed in TB but SSDs are still shown in GB.

  • LG smart TVs gain Apple Music app

    Hopefully most of the people using Apple Music on a TV will listen to this through a sound bar at a minimum. Today's nice svelte TVs have had to make one serious compromise to obtain that thinness: audio quality.
