  • DOJ confirms successful iPhone data extraction, withdraws encryption case against Apple [u]

Obligatory Comment: I guess John McAfee doesn't get to eat his shoe now. Unless he already has.

  • Macs may go even longer between revamps as Intel kills tick-tock

I need significant CPU power for audio DSP. I get that fine these days with whatever the top end is for MacBook Pros, and haven't needed to go up to Mac Pro or higher GHz iMac. However, the current state of apple's A-series ARM CPUs don't come close to the power I need. For a super thin Macbook Air and the performance you expect from those, sure, they could probably do it right now with an A9x, but it'll be quite some time before they ever could power higher end pro machines with ARM CPUs.
If the future is with ARM and to achieve the type of processing power needed, the solution will probably be distributed processing with numerous customer Apple ARMs used in one design. I can see a platform existing where an A10 is used with an Apple GPU (ARM based). If a DSP is needed, then I can see a custom sound DSP processor used either off chip or within the A10 (Ax or whatever). The only problem with all this is not the hardware, it's what it does to the install base. Essentially, backward compatibility would be a problem for software. That's never stopped Apple before.

  • Oculus founder says no Mac support coming until Apple builds 'good' system with better graphics

Shouldn't the biggest, richest, whatever, computer company build computers for everybody ? I don't understand comments in favor of ignoring those who want a decent GPU. At least give the option so that people have a CHOICE ! What's the use of making razor-thin iMacs ? Should i look at my screen from the side ? Thats just a useless, insane objective. Apple has been selling 3rd grade, which are also two or three year old components, while charging a premium. All is fair right ? Remember the Mac Mini ? Why is it intentionally crippled on the GPU side ? Why am i not ALOWED to buy me a Mac Mini which is AT LEAST an iMac without a screen ? And why is Apple not selling computers in a tier between the Mac Pro and the Mini (without a screen) ? Is that because Apple won't sell as many units of it as the iPhone ? I am a lifetime Apple-user but this intentionally crippling Macs with a silly cheap a$$ GPU makes me mad, seriously mad. If i want to enjoy a few ours a week of WOW or any other stupid game, let me be stupid for an hour a week. Give me the freakin choice to do so !
Because the vast majority of people using Macs don't want to rip open their computer to fiddle with it. That's the point. If you want to fiddle, don't buy a Mac.This philosophy is used across the entire Mac product line and started a long time ago, in an Apple universe far far away.

  • Apple's opposition to backdoors in FBI case gains global, animated attention

Alright, stay with me here. Why can't the FBI give Apple the phone, tell them...."Hey Apple, this is what we want." Apple does their thing behind closed doors without the FBI being involved at all, providing the required data, returning the phone back to the FBI in its exact state before they had it? In no way will the FBI be using a hacked back door. Can't they (Apple) just provide the data? I guess the thing everyone is hung up on is the precedent this would set for the gov to pull this many times. All they would have to do is site this case.

Cross-platform iMessage is a dream of mine. I want to use iMessage to contact every person I know along with its beatiful and generous selection of emoji.

I want to permanently delete Facebook Messenger, Kik, WhatsApp and JellySMS from my iPhone. iMessage on Android means I can iMessage everyone!
Don't you think iMessage is a selling point of iOS/OS X? The very fact that is does not exist on other platforms is reason enough (for me) to never need Android. Designing iMessage would not create the lure and would just keep people from not switching to iOS in the first place. That's a slippery slope that has to be managed very carefully. There are cross platform messaging apps (what's app, Skype...the list goes on I'm sure) if that's what you want.
