  • Apple's new iPhone SE lags siblings in sales as 9.7" iPad Pro performs well, analytics data says

We need to be patient here. The carrier upgrade cycle is based mostly on the fall release schedule of new iPhones. The SE may be most popular with current 4" iPhone users who's current contracts are then set to expire. Though my assumption depends on the ratio of 3 to 4 year old 4" iPhones that are either on- or off-contract.

Expanding availability to more markets will also help of course. It was only in 12 countries within the first few days.

  • Apple profiles iPad apps for World Autism Acceptance Day

In my opinion, it is Apple's long-term commitments to initiatives like this that make the frequent off-the-cuff criticisms of their efforts in environmental protection, improving contractor working conditions, protecting data security, and equal access to opportunity seem particularly shallow and cynical.

Many of the resources needed to make these types of accessibility features have been baked in to their products and OS's since the early Macs.

  • OS X 10.11.4 hidden framework hints Apple could rebrand it as 'macOS'

The MacOS references have been around since the creation of OS X out of NeXTSTEP/OpenStep. It's developer nomenclature that has hung around. The company and all its development was adamant [I was there] that MacOS is dead and the future in all incarnations is OS X.

It really stands for Operating System Ex, not Operating System 10. It's the reason they have OS X 10.x.x instead of OS 10.10.x.x.

    MacOS Is dead.
Mac OS X did not stand for "Operating System Ex" as you like to say it. It was originally just Mac OS 10. They used the "X" as a marketing gimmick to make it seem so much bigger than just a version change (from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS 10). They knew they were putting Unix in it, a complete overhaul of the system itself. So, they went with the Roman numeral for 10 which is X. Then people started referring to it as Mac OX "Ex" (myself included), even though Steve kept referring to it as Mac OS 10.

Now, should they go away from the "X" that is there? I have no idea; I am a developer not a marketing person [in my best McCoy voice]! But it may be time to retire the 10-series and move forward with 11. My thinking is that it will not be this upcoming version, but the next one when they release iOS 11 (assuming in 2017), they may release MacOS 11 then as well. Just a thought.
I'm going to take Mr. Driftmeyer's side of this argument since he was actually working for Apple Computer at the time of the name's introduction.

I've always associated the X in OS X with the X in NeXT, the operating system that spawned OS X, which contributed greatly to Apple's comeback. It would be a shame if the last vestige of this link we're removed before the current OS is replaced with the next ground-up re-written replacement.

  • Why Apple's iPhone SE lacks 3D Touch technology

This post hits the nail square on the head. All four arguments against including 3D touch (cost, size, logistics, limited helpfulness) are succinct and compelling. It's easy to imagine Apple's teams coming to the same conclusions.

    Nicely written and thanks.

  • What to expect from Apple's 'let us loop you in' event today

    Mmm ...

My 17yo grandson has a Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 6S and a PS4.  But he wanted a laptop to do his homework (Straight A student) and college courses.  Friends convinced him he needed a PC rather than a Mac (he could do some gaming too).

I'd be hesitant on the iPad Pro for school. This is where the Surface Pro 4 has it's appeal, it's still running Windows, so it will run any required software (or games) a student will need. That being said, a lower cost 9.7" iPad Pro might be a decent device for note taking to compliment a laptop. Although, the Surface 4 should be announced in the coming months, and unless you're in an art program, the Surface Pen is much better for note taking or general productivity.

An updated MacBook Pro 15" would be nice to see, something like the XPS 15, so Skylake-H, DDR4, GTX 960 (or better/equivalent) and Thunderbolt 3.

Never was a fan of the 12" Macbook, but I'm sure some users here might be interested in an updated model. Skylake Core m and a couple of Thunderbolt 3 ports might be a nice improvement. A better keyboard is also a must, the current one is terrible.
That's an unintentionally funny post you made, but you're new here, so it's understandable.

Dick is probably the last guy in this forum to whom I would presume to give computer shopping advice.
