  • Jony Ive reveals his iMac design took just three weeks

Ive and Jobs complemented each other; checks and balances.

We have an idea of what Ive produced without Jobs to push back, or any interference (from Cook, who knows to stay in his lane) -- the butterfly keyboard, hidden ports, etc.

Since Ive's departure, Apple products have rediscovered a sense of practicality, with functional keyboards, accessible ports, and other design decisions that might not be as elegant, but more functional.

Cook was Jobs' anointed successor, and while he expected them to work together, the way the prior relationship worked was not going to be repeated.  Different people, different strengths, and he urged Cook to do it his way.  Agree or not with that way, Apple is a larger, more successful company than when Jobs ran it.  I think he'd be pleased, since he was at heart a businessman with design sense, not a designer or engineer per se.

I doubt Ive would be nearly as adept with not just the numbers, and day to day facets of running a business, but navigating the minefields of dealing with regulators, politics, and doing it deftly, putting the company first, but not in a obviously crass, capitalistic way, even if that's still the goal.  The company is no different than other corporate giants in the way it acts in many ways, but it operates with a teflon-like shield helps it shed controversies that others can't escape.  Tim Apple could also be a good negotiator or diplomat.

  • Questionable iPhone 17 Pro Max render in better light looks almost tolerable

Seeing all these rumors reinforces the iPhone 5 as my favorite iPhone form factor.

No warts growing on the the surface (or worse, warts on top of warts), a black that is closer to black than the "sorta-kinda-black/dark grays" that followed (iPhone 7 excepted), and the power button on the top, where it's less likely to trigger taking an unintended screen shot when you just want to use the volume buttons and need some leverage, especially with a case that has poor button action.

    An elegant monolith.

Stuff like this reminds me of when the rumors of the portholes being added to the late Mac G4 MDD towers emerged.  "They can't possible add those, could they?"  Yes, they can.

  • Apple execs address Mac mini's hidden power button in 2024 redesign

Just use Ctrl + Cmd + Q to put a Mac to sleep.
    Na, it’s Option-Command-Media Eject key
    See https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh10330/mac

On keyboards that still have an Eject key, pressing Control-Eject displays the dialog box that allows Restart, Sleep, or Shut Down, like the old soft power key used to.  I hope Apple never removes it from the OS.

Pressing R restarts, S sleeps, and Return shuts down.  Full range of options three keystrokes away.

I used to religiously shut down the computer at the end of each day, but with the better power management on post-PPC Macs, rarely ever shut down the Mac now, or need to use the power button to recover from a freeze or crash.

  • iPhones stored for forensic analysis unexpectedly reboot, causing problems for police

How exactly would the phones brought into the lab communicate with the phone in Airplane mode, or especially the one in the faraday cage?
Not hard to dismiss the theory when they include tidbits like that undermine the whole premise.  Or maybe, Apple has secretly found a way to violate the laws of physics.

Does the original story out the masterminds or agency that authored this document?  It's behind a paywall.

  • Cellular Apple Watch buyers call out Verizon's maddening activation block

I'm not totally in agreement with how the EU regulators act, but this sounds like the kind of crap that they would not tolerate, and consumers should not.

But it's part of the legacy of the American Telco Monopoly, now cartel.

Those of a certain age will remember when Ma Bell would only allow devices it provided, leased or sold, to be connected to the phone network.  The notion of buying your own phone, answering machine, or whatever was completely foreign.
