  • Google's Pixel XL priced like Apple's iPhone 7 Plus, but it lacks numerous key features

I think people here aren't going to like this, but iOS/Siri is more of a liability for Apple than it's ever been since the first iPhone. Pixel is basically trying to sell itself on software and artificial intelligence. They are selling this as their A.I. phone. You can giggle about the spec wars, but you're missing the big picture that Google has surpassed Apple in software years ago, and Google is going to drive their "information" advantage into a hardware war that wont be about who has the faster CPU or most RAM.

I can only imagine in 2030 it's really about what company has the bigger server farms, artificial neural networking and machine learning algorithms that determines which product makes consumers lives the easiest. Not some display resolution or wide color gamut.

Google has the long game here. We're still figuring out what Apple has besides their phone at this point.
uhh what does google have besides ads? apple's non-iphone revenue is larger than many industry players.

From what I can gather, they've broken through a programming barrier. The AI teaches itself to program itself. Or maybe better, it programs itself to teach itself, to learn what to be aware of.
every AI shop always says that because it's the goal. but so far we haven't seen it.

Love the concept of your articles, but you should learn to edit;  I mean talk less; this goes on and on to the extent of stupidity.

More is not always better; you should learn to say "no" to yourself.
i actually agree with this. when i was a journalism student our articles for the paper had word limits so we had to learn to be concise. why use 5 words with 3 will suffice, say more with less, etc... the constraint was good for teaching focus.

  • Apple's iPhone 7 handily outperforms new Google Pixel in early benchmarks

So when are we going to start to hear about the Google Tax?

iPhones sell for $650 to $869
Google Pixel sells for the EXACT same amount.

Yet I don't hear a single wisper from the castrated tech media about a GOOGLE TAX
There's so far up Google's ass it isn't even funny. The Verge called this phone "refined. They ran a whole long puff piece about Google the phone maker as if this is the first time Google has done this. And just today they have on their front page a Walt Mossberg article calling this a bold move that is shaking up the industry (excuse me while I laugh).
file another one under "Malt Wossberg is a concern troll"....who knows what his deal is.

Very successful but not nearly the company it was. Not much has happened since Jobs, not anything real special. I miss the Jobs perfection.

-Once an early adopter, but now reluctant and cautious-
it's little unfair to say it's not the company it was. When Jobs was head of Apple the industry was in a much different place and there was still way more advancements available. At the moment, there's a low period in innovation because the available technology. If any company were to do something truly ground breaking, it would be too expensive to produce and way too expensive for consumer adoption.
i have to point out that this isn't true -- innovation at apple happens every day. innovation != flashy new product releases. if anything, ongoing, behind the scenes engineering innovation is what leads up to those big releases.
