  • Apple's user privacy stance has caused problems for internal engineering teams

Of the examples cited, some are technical challenges (Siri app purchases without violating guidelines).

Some are deliberate decisions not to collect data (Apple TV recommendations). Most recommendations are useless anyway. I can't think of a single time Netflix suggested something that I wanted to watch that I otherwise wouldn't have known about.

Do not see the supposed issue described with Maps at all. As soon as I open Maps, the app knows where I am and can offer suggestions, knows my frequent destinations (I let it) and provides drive times.

Sure, there might be a feature that gets killed, but I bet you more often than not, the teams find ways to implement the feature AND satisfy the privacy guidelines. This forces them to "Think Different".

    Good for them.

  • Wemo Smart Plug with Thread review: An affordable & fast HomeKit outlet

Have a house full of Wemo outlets so I picked up this to give it a shot and begin to add Thread network products around the house,
Set up was a breeze. Other than my Apple TVs and HomePods, this is my first device with Thread, so I am anxious to see how this will improve reliability and responsiveness.
Since it was my first Thread item, I purposely picked an outlet that was close to a HomePod Mini but further from the WiFi router to see how it worked in the Home app. So far, so good.

Not sure exactly why Thread devices can't be seen in the Wemo app. Sometimes the outlets would lose contact with the Home app,but work fine in the Wemo app. We'll see how this is in that regard.

  • Apple wants major NFL streaming deal beyond 'Sunday Ticket'

The only “major” NFL rights deal left to negotiate (through 2033) is Sunday Ticket, there’s nothing major beyond it.

Streaming on phones/tablets is a “minor” deal, at best.
Historically, there is nothing "major" about Sunday Ticket. Since it was only available through Direct TV, it was largely irrelevant for the vast majority of viewers.
I'd bet more people watch Red Zone every week than a season's worth of Sunday Ticket.

  • Apple looking to the past, working on how to put a Mac in a keyboard

    DAalseth said:
How could Apple possibly think this was patentable. The article mentions several examples of prior designs. I want to add the Commodore 64 which is where I first ran into it. This is an OLD concept. Let me add as well that a friend of mine had a Commodore 64. Had two of them actually. The first one lasted a month before his son accidentally dumped a Coke into it and fried everything. This is the reason an all in one, computer-in-the-keyboard is a VERY bad idea. Keyboards catch the worst of what users drop. They need to be cheap and replaceable. Keep the CPU up where it is safe, crumb free, and dry.

EDIT: Yes I know laptops are essentially the same thing. Somehow users seem to treat laptops better than desktop keyboards. Not sure why, but over the years I replaced a lot of keyboards that got destroyed by users in various creative ways. Wasn't nearly as much of a problem with a laptop.

Based on the limited info provide here, it appears that the "computer in a keyboard" is not what they are looking to patent. There are specific implementation ideas that might be patented.

Apple argues that therefore "further tailoring of housing designs, shapes, and configurations to provide additional or enhanced device functionality" is possible - and desirable. That's really the thrust of the entire patent application, as the majority of its more 130,000 words is detailing methods for ventilating such a keyboard to keep components cool.
There are, though, multiple references to making such a device even more portable. For one instance, Apple says that the "computing device can be foldable about an axis."

  • US could hit Russia with export rule that killed Huawei, banning US tech

    ... Stupid.   Very, very stupid.
The post above is chock full of misinformation.
Given the many times that I have countered George since he has been here, I'll spare you the details. Do your own searches on the details.
It's actually entertaining whenever GBM speaks. I always wonder how he's going to defend brutal dictatorships, and he always manages. I would like to have seen him defend the dictatorships back around 1940.

I wish websites like this would have a way we could block certain users from being seen by us. I know a few people would block me, but I think GBM would take top spot.

    I don;t defend "brutal dictatorships".
But I do object to instigating totally unnecessary wars.

All we have to do is guarantee that NATO will not threaten Russia by moving into (another of) its neighbor(s).
But, we instead favor war.   Economic war (at least for us).  But still, war.

Who is going to pay for this war of ours?   As usual, it will be us.

But, I am sorry if the truth does not support your war mongering imperialism.  Perhaps it is YOU that should be blocked?

I thought Neville Chamberlain died in 1940.
So, we guarantee that Ukraine won't join NATO. Russia then invades or usurps Ukraine's democracy, like they did Belarus.
Then Russia's interests border Poland, Slovakia, Romania and further isolate the Baltic states.
Then they say NATO membership for Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania must be revoked. Or else.
At best, we are at the same borders before the demise of the Warsaw Pact, at worst, he makes a play for all of Europe.

Does any of this sound at all familiar???
