  • US lawmakers urge Apple CEO Tim Cook to reinstate HKmap Live app

    Prove to me that the US and multinational companies have had no business with Saudi Arabia for the last couple of decades since that country is a brutal dictatorship.
    Of course this hasn’t happened instead we are getting hypocrisy from these representatives.

    Prove to me that there has been an ongoing boycott of products from China including One Plus phones, game consoles and most products from Walmart and Amazon.
    Of course that hasn’t happened either because of either hypocrisy or people not being informed or not caring.
    * What really makes the situation more absurd is that the HK map software program is available on the Internet! An app is not needed.

    This debate fits with the usual arguments where actions against China are not evenly applied.
    Instead the focus is only on Apple as if Apple was the only company to ever do business with China. And Apple by itself can change China.
    Ignoring that Chinese products have completely infiltrated the US economy.

  • Compared: Apple's iPhone 11 Pro Max versus the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and 10+

    Good video review.
    I’ll add my preferences;
    1. Android apps from Google are all designed to mine user data for targeted ads. That’s how Google makes most of its $ & it’s why its apps are free.
    - By contrast, Apple does a better job protecting my privacy.
    Apple does this by putting much of the cost of apps as part of the price of the phone. I’m willing to pay that price.
    2. Samsung phones have bloatware. There are Google apps & as many Samsung apps which have the same features. The phone carrier may add more apps.
    - iPhones begin with a much “cleaner”/slimed down app experience. No bloat.
    3. Quality of login (mostly a repeat from the video);
    - It has been reported that the S10 fingerprint reader has accuracy problems. The Samsung facial recognition is not 3D & can be fooled.
    - Apple is much more careful w/ its Face ID which uses 3D tech & is very hard to fool.
    I do want an under screen fingerprint sensor but only when it can be done right.
    4. In terms of camera color accuracy Apple has done a better job than Samsung.
    5. Android phones are lucky to have 2 years of OS updates.
     iPhones (with iOS updates) are designed to last ~5 years. The iPhones are very powerful & so can handle several years of new OS features.

  • Hands on with the 2019 10.2-inch seventh generation iPad

    I'd be interested in the read on using a 3 year old processor....
    Clearly the A10 is good processor -- it works well in an iPhone 7 and in the 6th Gen iPad.

    But, using it in the 7th Gen iPad suggests to me either of two things:
    1)  The 7Th Gen iPad will have a shorter lifespan than usual for a new Apple product
    2)  The A10 processor and the equipment that uses it will have a longer lifespan than usual

    I wonder which it is?
    That's a very valid question and part of the reason I would think twice about getting a 7th gen iPad. The A10 processor is 3 years and 4 generations old. I couldn't find any comparisons with the A13, but the A12 was in general twice as fast as the A10. If all you're doing is checking e-mail, but even 'just surfing' with Safari can take a fair amount of processor power anymore, so I'd be worried that it wouldn't age as well as other iPads with a newer processor.

    I have a 6th generation iPad. It’s good enough for a pretty complicated game; Star Trek Fleet Command.
    It handles side by side documents in Pages / Notes well.

    Apple sells overpowered mobile hardware which can be used for several years.
    For instance my wife & I have used the iPhone 6 for 5 years. Capable phones. (We will be upgrading in a few months.)
    I expect our iPads to last as long.

  • Apple & Ireland head to court to battle $14.4B EU back tax on Sept. 17

    Wikipedia has an informative summary of the case between Ireland, the EU & Apple titled;

    ”EU illegal State aid case against Apple in Ireland”

    - Essentially the EU Commission is using a technicality in the “Double Irish” system.
    Apple did not use the standard Double Irish structure of having two companies. Instead Apple had two divisions within the same company.
    - There is no clear evidence that Apple’s version of the Double Irish was better (in terms of reduced taxes) than many other companies in Ireland using the standard Double Irish such as by Microsoft or Google.

    - Why is the EU trying to meddle with Ireland’s tax structure?
    For political reasons.
    The EU system of high taxes funds a huge selection of benefits as well as generous pensions & month long + vacations. But the EU economically is under tremendous strain.
    Result; the plans to target US companies for much higher taxes (such as by France).

    - Why is Ireland resisting the EU? To avoid the eventual elimination of all tax advantages in Ireland which would lead to a mass exodus of multinational corporations from the country & an economic depression in Ireland.
    The Wikipedia article explains;

    ”...i§ Understanding Irish decision, US–controlled multinationals are 25 of Ireland's top 50 companies; pay over 80% of all Irish corporate taxes (circa €8 billion per annum); directly employ 25 per cent of the Irish labour force (and indirectly pay half of all Irish salary taxes); and are 57 per cent of all non-farm OECD value-add in the Irish economy. In June 2018, the American–Ireland Chamber of Commerce estimated the value of US investment in Ireland was €334 billion, exceeding Irish GDP (€291 billion in 2016)... The cost of US multinationals abandoning Ireland as a US corporate–tax haven, would greatly exceed the EU's €13 billion "windfall".”

  • All three 2020 iPhone models expected to have 5G wireless connectivity

    Well yeh, Duh!
    Why else would Apple have capitulated to Qualcomm but to produce a 5G phone?

    The only real questions is:   Why would they wait 14 months to release it?   Samsung, Huawei and others (as well as all the carriers) will be well into 5G by then,  If they sit on their butt and do nothing till September 2020 they will look real bad.

    They should release at least one 5G phone in the first part of 2020 - not wait till nearly 2021.
    Apple waits until technologies are more mature & can be widely introduced on their best selling phone models.
    This way Apple can avoid the Galaxy Fold mess & the Note 7 (banned on planes) disaster.
