  • Suppliers are backing away from Apple AR, says Kuo

I don’t understand the role of these companies.  I thought Apple designed the stuff and these other companies assembled them.  It sounds like the Pegatrons and Luxshares are designing or helping to design?
Designing a product and preparing a commercial manufacturing line for them are two very different things. There are lots of technical hurdles and bespoke machinery required to build Apple's products, because they're constantly pushing boundaries.

  • iPhone 15 Ultra: What it may look like, and what to expect in 2023

Look at the Apple Watch. They have rounded bottom edges and the glass is part of the round, and the round is more parabolic than circular.

The problem with this approach is that it exposes the glass directly to drops on the edge. For that reason, I think they will keep the glass flat and just curve the titanium.

  • MacBook Air with M2 processor review: The sweet spot for Mac portables in 2022

Benchmarks with 100 Chrome tabs while rendering a video and doing intensive disk I/O isn't remotely real-world. Skipping the Media Engine when encoding media to prove a point just proves that traffic is addictive, and doesn't say anything accurate about the hardware.

Just a side note, as a filmmaker both of these scenarios are in fact a regular occurrence for me. I have terrible tab hygiene and keep dozens of tabs open at a time, whilst editing and rendering video. And when doing H264 exports, quality is higher doing a 2-pass software encode rather than using the Media Engine - so that’s the standard practice for any final deliveries.

Of course, I’m also not going to be doing this on a MBA. But just wanted to note that for a certain segment these are very much real-world scenarios.

  • Script for Apple TV+ 'Pachinko' pilot reveals highly detailed writing behind the drama

The decision to change the order of events from the book was a catastrophic mistake. Even though we read the book recently we constantly found ourselves lost and not being able to figure out who was who. This misguided attempt at being “artsy” could be easily fixed in an “author’s cut” edition. Other than that, an outstanding filmed version.
Having also read the book – I have to disagree. The series does an extraordinary job of drawing parallels between the different eras, driving home the relevance of each era to our present lives.

Compare that with a more conventional period drama, which is how the series would have felt like in the first season if it just focused on the colonial period. For all their strengths, one weakness of period dramas in general is that there is often an emotional distance between us and the characters, because their experiences don't feel immediately relevant to our present lives. That's something which Pachinko overcomes entirely by interweaving the different generations, driving home how Sunja's experiences parallel Solomon's life, and by extension, our own lives.

Separately – I have to say that the episodes by Kogonada (1-3 and 7) felt much stronger than the ones by Justin Chon. Speaking as a filmmaker myself, Kogonada is masterful in his visual storytelling.

I love Fantastical. But to be honest the subscription is extraordinarily expensive for what it is... it's a simple, well-designed app that doesn't have much ongoing development to keep it functional. Having subscribed to it for two years, I think I will cancel it going forwards. If it were $20 a year I could swallow that.
