    Making money from sw is already hard, covering every variant can only be done if there are enough potential users to cover the costs.

    Some will stay in, but others will find out it is just not worth the cost.

    I've got a feeling iPad sales will be up this quarter.  You had the major retailers running Black Friday sales for $249 and I know at least five people who got one including my wife.  It wouldn't surprise me to see unit sales up to the 15 - 16 million range.
    The 3 was a mistake as they should have waited till autumn (when the 4 got released) that one actually has still OK performance.

    The SOC / memory in the Ipad 3 was not strong enough for the screen it had and meant it reached its useful end of life earlier in actuality quicker than the Ipad 2.

    The A8 cpu with 1gb ram was released in 2014.
    This thing has no screen really, and will not play games or do a lot of of the heavy lifting normally done in phones in tablets. 
    So, an A8 and who knows what other DSP function they added, probably using the GPU for many of those DSP calculations, is probably sufficient for an audio centered device.

    Considering it is connected to power and probably has a higher thermal dissipation capability and clock than the normal A8, it likely not that far from the performance of the A9 in the 6s.

    Matching rev stream to revenues and profit is why you lease. When your not sure how space you will eventually need leasing is particularly good.
    in this case , they need specialized space so buying options might be limited.
