  • France, UK to test contact tracing apps without Apple and Google technology

I’ll be downloading this as soon as it’s available as I completely trust the UK government...
    Thanks for the morning laugh.

  • Apple Car research focusing on use of Tesla-style induction motor

    melgross said:
I use three phase induction motors in some of my equipment. To control them, because they work either over single phase 120, or single phase 240, depending on the motor, I use what are called VFDs. These convert either single phase 120 or 240 to three phase 240 (at the outlet in most places we see 220 measured). VFD stands for variable frequency drive. By varying the frequency the speed of the motor can be varied by a wide range, often from zero to possibly 3600, as with my motors. These are complex devices. They have control over every parameter of the motor, and monitor motor characteristics and health. They have reverse, jog, degree of turn, and most importantly, constant torque.

there are special “inverter duty” motors for this purpose, because motors don’t like to run off their designed frequency of either 50 or 60 Hz. If they do, they get too hot. The VFD will then shut them down. So while a drill press can use a regular (cheaper) 3 phase motor with this, its very disconcerting to have the mill or lathe shut off in the middle of a long cut.

this technology the article is taking about is almost the exact same technology we use. But our equipment isn’t meant to be bumping along the road while in use.
We h ave tons of motors where I work and a number of VFD's. Most of ours are 480V 3 phase. VFD's do come in handy.

  • How Apple went from bust to five million colorful iMacs sold

    apple ][ said:
Lots of products have gone through name changes and had their names changed before the official release. Another one that comes to mind is Apple TV, that was originally called iTV. If I'm not mistaken, Apple even demoed it or spoke about it on one of their keynotes, and they used the name iTV.
I think it's just a sign Apple wanted to get off the whole "i" naming thing in general. Remember when people were calling the Apple Watch the iWatch!!!! The problem is people see Apple may come out with something new and then copyright the name iWatch or iTV, etc and then Apple couldn't use it. It's really about as dumb as putting a X in front of a name. Which is how we got XBox. Apple wanted to move away from using the "i" and instead just go with Apple. Which is why we have Apple TV, Apple Watch, Apple Homepod, etc. Apple is a little stuck with iOS. But they call the others TVOS, WatchOS, etc, even though it's pretty much iOS. Will Apple stick with iPhone and iPad instead of just Apple Phone or Apple Pad? Maybe it's just to late to change those names now.

  • Apple was the most imitated brand in phishing attempts in Q1 2020

Never click on links in emails. Just go to the site by typing i the address manually. You look at that address above, it's clearly not Apple trying to get your info.

The BEST thing you can do is turn on 2-Factor!!! Because even if you were dumb enough to fall for the whole fake web page log-In screen used to steam your log-in credentials. Without that second factor, they are stopped in their tracks!!! Even if you gave them your 6 digit code, unless it was used within a minute, that code would have changed and now they are back to being locked out of your account.

I had someone from CHINA somehow got my old password which was used at a few places. That person was stopped in their tracks when my iPhone popped up a Box saying someone was trying to gain access to my account, showing a small map of China, with a Allow or Deny Box. Of course I denied!!!! If I didn't have 2 factor turned on, they would have had full access to my Apple Account and done all kinds of things. Like copying all my pictures, or worse.

Of course after that I updated my Password to something really LONG and used no where else. I'm slowly working on changing my passwords everywhere else to long use one once passwords. This is where you really NEED a password manager. I use Lastpass. I got a Family Account and have my Dad on that to use, and helping him with turning on 2-Factor at places, at least the really important places. your e-mail account for example. Someone gains access to that, now they can just do a password recovery for your other places and gain access to them. He has his Facebook account hacked a few times. So 2-Factor is turned on there now, along with better, random password. His bank, I got it turned on.

So make sure to use a long, Random password. I let LastPass generate a 20 or so digit one. Different for each site. So if one place gets hacked, they can't gain access to anywhere else you may be at. Turn on 2-Factor everywhere you can. I even have it on for Amazon. So if you get suckered into being Phished, it's not the end of the world, as they still can't gain access because of that second factor. Then when you realize what happened, you can go in and change your password to something new and Lastpass will update it's self. If I can get my 72 year old Dad to get on this page, you should be able to do it.

  • Eufy readies pair of HomeKit Secure Video-capable security cameras

I’m usually a little skeptical of the promise of future support for HomeKit. Too many times it has taken too long or never come to fruition.

These cameras seem fairly inexpensive compared to other HomeKit security cameras. Does anyone know the reason for that? Normally I’d think the plan was to make it up in subscription fees but with HomeKit Secure Video enabled one wouldn’t have to use their service. At least, that’s what I’ve been led to believe.
Or you can just buy a WYZE Cam for $19.99 or their Pan version which you can remotly control to move around for $29.99. With local storage on a MicroSD Card, basic cloud storage for FREE. They also offer a cheap cloud storage option, which I don't use. They have 2 way communication also. No Homekit support, but I really don't see a reason to really need it? I get notified on my phone if it senses motion and I can touch the link and it brings me to the app. Is that not good enough?

I am a fan of other EUFY products like their Doorbell, and completely wireless cameras because you can do local storage and have no monthly fee's unlike everyone else.

I have PoE cameras around my house, Currently 6 with 2 more planned in the future. They are recording 24/7 to my locked up NVR. I can look at that on my iPhone or ipad at any time s long as I have a Internet connection. I see no need for Homekit support for those either. I am a Homekit house with a number of Homekit devices.
