Ring's app caught spying on users, sharing data with third-parties
Panamaniak said:Yikes, here we go again. My parents have these and admin them on Android phones. Tried to get me some for Xmas, I took a hard pass, specifically for this reason.I do want some security cams for my home, but won’t install until I do enough research to put together a proper closed circuit system that doesn’t rely on 3rd party cloud monitoring. These are our homes we’re talking about, I don’t get how people just turn their privacy over so easily. I guess the convenience out weighs the risk? -

CES 2020: Best of HomeKit
ihatescreennames said:If HomeKit Secure Video isn't available then I'll be skipping that product. We recently bought a vacation home and I've been looking for HomeKit compatible cameras. So far the only one is the Logitech Circle 2, not that I think it's bad but I'd like some more choices.8
Do you really need HomeKit Cameras? I installed 5MP PoE cameras with a NVR. Mounted the NVR inside a lock box in a out of the way place. I'll get notifications on my phone for Movement and other things right on my iPhone and iPad and access all that Video, life or recorded on my iPhone or iPad or my Desktop for that matter. Anywhere in the world with a Internet connection. Other than some upfront cost and my time to install, there's ZERO monthly charges. I currently have 5 fixed cameras and 1 PTZ Dome camera. I have room to add 2 more cameras to the NVR. (Network Video Recorder). I didn't find it hard to run a single Ethernet cable. I got a bulk role and cut to the length I need. 5MP is in between 1080P and 4K. The higher the resolution the better. A blurry person on video is worthless. Being able to zoom into a picture or video and have less pixels the better.
I get a notification on my phone, I touch it and go right into the app and can now see my cameras. I just don't think Homekit support for Security cameras is a big deal. I'm a Homekit house and can control my garage door, my Inside temp, my Outside sprinklers, and some of my lights. The biggest plus for me has been linking my Garage Lights to my Garage door using Apple's HOME app. When the door starts to open, the lights come on and when it closes, the lights go off. Doesn't matter if I use Siri or push the button on the wall. Much better light to see as to not trip over anything. For me that's been the biggest plus.
For the cheap route, my Glow Light switch for the master bathroom. So I can see where it is in the dark. A few weeks ago added a LED light strip right under my bed, which is connected to a little motion sensor. So when I step on the floor in the dark, it lights up along the side of my bed. It's pretty nice. Should of done it sooner. it's these little CHEAP things. I have a Motion light switch for my hallway light. Light comes right on when it senses movement and it's cheap!!!! Sure you can get a expensive Homekit light switch and I have 3 of them, and a Motion sensor and link them, but that's a whole lot more money. Sometimes the cheaper way, old school way of doing things makes more sense. Think about what you want to do first. Do you really want to go the expensive route? Do you really want another monthly payment for as long as you own that product? These are things to think about. Maybe not over think it. I'm all for more and more things supporting Homekit. But really, it's not always needed. I have specific reasons why I went the way I did for each thing and location. -
More vendors lining up to supply Mini LED screen in 2020 iPad Pro
davgreg said:So how will this impact battery life?
The greatest advantage my iPad Pro has over my MacBook Air is battery life when doing similar stuff.
MicroLED are even more energy efficient than OLED.
So I remember Apple acquiring a company that was working on MicroLED displays a few years ago. Samsung has their HUGE MicroLED display and it's large because they hadn't gotten the MicroLED's small enough to use in a smaller 4K TV. Now it's down to iPad side? Home come not a single other Computer, Tablet, etc are using MircoLED as this article sounds like everyone is lining up to make them for Apple. Seems kind of strange to me. -
