Because the 6 was likely their largest launch. The 6s beat Apple's first weekend sales numbers, but remember 6s opened in China - 6 did not. For all other quarters 6s sold fewer phones. Also, saying sales are approximately 4x as much as a previous period is pretty specific - not at all like saying sales were phenomenal; beat expectations, etc. Any bump will likely show in quarterly numbers.

Modest upgrades...The upgrades on a whole seem fairly significant and comparable to previous releases. Maybe Apple should release the same phone with a different shell every year to wow and confuse the broader tech media

Hmmm I feel it will be a tough choice between matte and glossy black. Matte (if similar to iPhone 5) would be great, though a glossy black back would blend near seamlessly into the front cover glass - almost like an all glass phone...
