  • Apple has the 'key ingredients' needed to disrupt the car market, analysts say

    davgreg said:
The people who manufacture systems and components supply many makers and need lead time to be ready. Then there is the question of who would build it since Apple does not have a car plant. Apple does not make any of the hardware it sells and that would likely be the case in this arena.
Apple could invest in or buy outright an electric car maker. There are a slew of such companies already operating in China. I don't understand why people insist Apple would only deal with the Big Three automakers in America. They don't make Macs, iPhones, iPads or anything else in the US. For that matter, Apple doesn't make anything at all. They contract with other companies. It would be business as usual for them to offshore such manufacturing.

  • Attackers breach cybersecurity firm FireEye, steal hacking tools

Released the info on Thursday? How come this was on UK BBC news a couple of days ago...?

Just a typo by Mike Petersen. The press release he links to is dated Tuesday.

Doesn't look good for FireEye, though. You'd think a cybersecurity firm would be able to secure their own systems. If I were a current client, I'd be looking elsewhere.

  • Apple engineers partner with Cloudflare to improve internet privacy

How's the uptime on Cloudflare compared to Google? I used Cloudflare for a while when it first appeared on the scene and had a number of interruptions, which led me back to alternatives. I settled on Google (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) after also trying OpenDNS because it seemed like the most consistently reliable and good enough performing DNS service that I could basically set and forget, i.e., totally hands-off.
I have 1.1.1.1 set as the exclusive DNS on my MBP. No other addresses. Haven't had any problems.

The funniest experience I had with 1.1.1.1 was when a know-it-all IT consultant who helps set up the systems at work noticed I had 1.1.1.1 set on the Windows PC on my desk. He had no idea what it was. I told him that's Cloudflare's DNS service. He tried to tell me it's offshore stuff, not really Cloudflare's and it's dangerous to use that. The following week, Firefox debuted DNS over HTTPS, defaulting to the "dangerous" 1.1.1.1.

  • Uber's Head of PR walked away from an Apple job offer

She's got her job cut out for her at Uber. I hate that company. Signed up a couple of years ago but never took a ride. Needed a ride recently, so I opened the app. It told me I wasn't allowed to book a ride until I paid my outstanding balance of $0. Checking the ride history, it confirms I never took any rides. Signed up for Lyft instead and used it whenever I've needed a ride since.

  • UK updates laws banning iPhone use while driving

Yet another case of laws not keeping up with technology, combined with the fact that legislators are not always the most technically adept.

Laws are a poor substitute for common sense and ethics.
