  • AppleInsider podcast talks 'iPhone 8,' Mac Pro, Thunderbolt GPUs & more

Niel, thanks for correcting DED on Android Auto.    If DED feels that Android Auto is so bad on a variety of current/recent android phones AppleInsider should do a video where he compares the APPLE 7 & SE phone against two Android flagships and two mid range phones in atleast 3-5 different cars.   Would be a great project to see this tested.

According to Android Central, which wrote up "what works with Android Auto" last summer, " If there's a weak link for Android Auto, it comes when you actually plug the phone in. Because the various Android manufacturers do all sorts of nonsense to their phones, including what happens when you plug one in. And on occasion, Android Auto might not work at all."

Specific to Samsung, the article noted:

"Samsung sells more Android phones than anyone. They're also more customized than just about anything out there. There's good and bad news here. Take the Galaxy S7, for example. There are folks who have used it without issue. And then there are those of us who have never gotten the GS7 to work. Maybe it's a software issue. Maybe there's something inherent about the GS7 that doesn't like the cable I'm using. I don't know.

"But I do know that there are 31 separate versions of the Galaxy S7 (worldwide). Some work. And some don't. Again, I'll point you to the forums."

  • Mastercard to add fingerprint sensors to cards, won't follow strict Apple Pay security pol...

also "In any case, there's no way they can implement the same kind of security policy that Apple developed for Touch ID and Apple Pay"

Here's a tip DED - Apple Pay is just VSTS - Visa Token Services https://usa.visa.com/partner-with-us/payment-technology/visa-digital-solutions.html and guess what, it's just as secure as the other systems.

The issue isn't tokenization. it's how the hardware can be attacked. If you read the article that jumps out rather clearly.

Also, you don't hand your phone to random merchants. You do frequently do this with cards, particularly in the US. That give anyone access to a card with your prints already all over it for a long enough time to capture your print data while in possession of the card.

So all around, having a sensor on the card is radically worse in terms of real world security than having an expensive phone that you don't hand around to others.

Your criticism is welcome, but if you keep posting abusive comments your account will be terminated. Forums are provided for intelligent discourse on articles.

  • EFF: Google Chromebook is still spying on grade school students

    gatorguy said:
The author is free to correct me if mistaken but the EFF is not claiming Google is "spying" on schoolchildren, nor is Google attempting to collect data about children that they should not. The way I've read the report is that schools themselves are not handling student privacy in the manner they should. The way the article was written implies over and over that this is Google doing something onerous, which is not what the EFF is saying is it?
You clearly didn't read the report, or the linked federal complaint the EFF filed against Google two years ago. Why do you hate the truth so much? This isn't brain surgery or controversial. You're just working to cloud the water with "questions?" that you expect others to spend their time debunking.

  • Apple's Find my iPhone fingers a phone finagler

Are you on drugs DED? What kind of headline is that?
It's a clever headline. I can dumb it down if necessary.

  • One Apple GPU, one giant leap in graphics for iPhone 8

    appex said:
Apple should use standards in the market. Not only ports and connectors, but also unsoldered microprocessors, RAM, SSD, GPU, etc. Otherwise may work in the short term, but not in the long one. Remember the PowerPC fiasco.
"the great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from"
