  • J.D. Power: 2017 tablet buyers report "outstanding" satisfaction, ready to spend money on ...

"Apple's cheaper iPads are as satisfying as Surface Pros at twice the price"

See this is why no-one besides AI can take DED serious - the new iPad was just released a week or so ago, so how can he already draw those conclusions? No research or JD Power survey has these in it.
As said before, DED is doing this site a massive disservice with his factually wrong and overly biased articles.
There is no comparison of a specific model (such as the new 2017 IPad) here. It was not even out when the survey was taken. But (and this next part is important)... Entry model iPads had previously been cheaper. Remember?

The point is: this comparison of the "user reported satisfaction" across the entire $300-1200 range of iPads vs $800-$1600 Surface Pros is flawed, but also indicated that everything else being said about tablets is also not in sync with what buyers themselves think.

  • Apple rival Samsung forecasts high profits despite Note 7 fires & political scandals

This is what happens when you innovate, put out devices with the latest cutting edge technology in them, like wireless charging, fast charging, waterproofing, give customers a headphone jack, a fully customizable OS, smartwatches that will pair with any other mobile device, a VR ecosystem at a great price. All make for a winning formula. Plus make all the most important parts (screens, chipsets, memory) for the other biggest mobile phones out there too, you are gonna make some big money!

We know where Samsung makes its money because the company reports it.

IM is smartphones tablets and PCs, etc (similar business segment to Apple). It's down significantly since 2014. So no, "wireless charging, fast charging, waterproofing, give customers a headphone jack, a fully customizable OS, smartwatches that will pair with any other mobile device, a VR " are not the reason Samsung is making more money over the past two years.

It's mostly from and Semiconductors-- displays and largely RAM, because all those Chinese phones have to pack in lots of DRAM to run Android ( and also because Apple is buying up flash for high end sales of iOS devices).  CE (appliances) are also growing. Samsung smartphones are down, and in particular profitable smartphones are down since 2014. Clearly because Apple erased the size difference.

So it's curious because The iPad didn't score #1? Hasn't Apple been #1 with this survey before?

Yeah, I think that's pretty much it.

The big picture issue here is that when it comes to "pro" tablets, Microsoft is offering a product that many people really like and Apple is struggling with the iPad Pro. It's not the iPad Pro that gives Apple the lead in tablet sales, it's the more consumption-oriented non-pro iPads.

How is apple struggling with iPad Pro? It immediately outsold all Surface sales all by itself. The rest of iPad sales is far beyond what Surface has ever sold.

    From last summer:

That's a dollar figure, and it doesn't show iPad Pro vs other iPads.

From last Fall, the iPad Pro accounts for about 1/3 of iPad unit sales:

    http://www.macworld.com/article/3137457/hardware/apple-leads-tablet-sales-but-the-ipad-pro-is-not-its-best-seller.html ;

Also, it's actually a little misleading to look just at Surface -- you have to look at all of the 2-in-1 Windows hybrids to see how the MS tablet concept is doing in sales compared Apple's.

Don't get me wrong -- I don't find those things compelling myself. But I give Microsoft credit for sticking with it, continuing to refine and improve.

"Microsoft is offering a product that many people really like and Apple is struggling with the iPad Pro"

So you think, given the chance, you'd rather be Microsoft or one of its licensees than Apple?

    Such a
    masochist!

  • Retina MacBook Pro minus Touch Bar, iPad Pro Cintiq capability rumored in development

Rumor with no data backing it up. On the other side, in the Q new MacBook Pros went on sale, Apple's Mac ASP (average selling price) jumped to $1,348, a year-over-year increase of $78 or 6.1%--the highest Macs have reached since the March quarter, 2013. Refurbs didn't push ASP up. Thom Holwerda is not a credible source, and Marco Arment observes anecdotes, not global data. All very hard to swallow. There was a severe blogger-based anti-Pro campaign complaining about no "32GB laptops," followed by a surge in Mac sales at higher ASPs (than when those 2015 MPBs were sold new!), and so as a result Apple is going to ditch TouchBar? Super Stupid. What will happen is that Intel will drop new chips this year, MPBs will get a speed bump and capacity to address more memory. Apple should also work on a Thunderbolt solution for GPUs, either in an external expansion chassis (supporting them, if not selling) or a GPU-backed TB3 display, like an iMac without the CPU, and a GPU you can upgrade.
