  • Apple shift to TMSC for iPhone may force Samsung to split chip design, fabrication businesses

This one's too late for Samsung. Apple has moved to TSMC. If Apple makes another move to a new fab, it will be to Intel.

Qualcom has serious issues of their own with Apple moving to Intel for the cellular modem. With Mediatek producing low cost SoCs and LG also looking to produce their own SOC, QCOM's CPU sales are going to tank.

QCOM is planning on entering the server market, but competing with Intel on pure performance where price sensitivity is not much of an issue is an effort in futility.

Samsung will not be saved by QCOM. And when all is said and done, QCOM will also be moving to TSMC as that company has a fierce tailwind driving it in the form of Apple. They will offer greater performance at lower cost than Samsung as a result of the investments they can make because of the profits enabled by Apple.

It would be amusing to see Samsung's chip designers move to TSMC fabs because Samsung's fabs aren't as capable.

That being said, I still believe that Intel will be manufacturing Apple's SoCs one day in the not too distant future and TSMC themselves may find the loss of Apple's business quite crippling also. Intel can integrate the modem into the SOC and have that incredible memory product, 3D XPoint. Things that TSMC cannot provide.

  • Google updates iPhone search app with changes intended to boost usage, customization

I actually like the Apple news app. I rarely use a search engine to seek out news anymore. I am not a Facebook member but my wife is and she very much likes the Facebook news feed. I can't emphasize that enough. She has stopped browsing the web all together for her news. Facebook's live video is genius and I suspect is going to put a huge dent into YouTube. But that's another story.

I suspect Google is seeing a significant drop off in news content delivered by their search engine as a result of the two developments. Much like they saw a drop off in shopping using Google search after the Amazon app was released. I don't use search for much of anything meaningful anymore.

I go to trip adviser for travel, Amazon for shopping and digital media along with iTunes for digital media, the Apple news app for news, the IMDB app for movie and film reviews, the echo for weather reports and the list goes on. I do maybe 15% of my web activities using search these days, whereas in days past, most of everything I did was based on search.

Google's data mining doesn't apply to me.  I don't need them. And people are turning to the app model in droves. It is bad news for them over the long term. And likely the reason they are so desperate to find another revenue stream.

Improving a search function won't do anything if it isn't used. And Amazon provides far superior product search results than Google.

Google is becoming irrelevant. Much like Microsoft is. Because of their size, they will be around for a while. But, their products won't be anything anyone has much of a need for.

Google search is all about finding content. But the firms providing the content are now providing it directly. Google is in a bad place, but they brought this on themselves.

  • Apple announces thinner MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, Touch ID, USB-C ports starting at $179...

A USB-A to USB-C adapter is quite inexpensive.

    https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Adapter-Converts-Resistor-ChromeBook/dp/B01AHKYIRS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1477602932&sr=8-6&keywords=USB+USBc

I don't get it. People are honestly critical of the 4 TB3 ports!! I would rather rather have the functionality and bandwidth of TB3 than an old USB-A or DVI port. TB3 is more than worth having to purchase an inexpensive adapter.

I was actually impressed by the new machines. OLED still isn't mainstream and I like the touchbar. Discrete graphics in the higher end machine is a plus. The discrete graphics would work well with the iPad Pro using Duet and having such a set up is quite portable and would serve nearly conceivable need I would ever have. Including the ability to run Windows in VMWare.

I am seriously looking at picking up one of these machines.

The Surface Studio is so much more exciting then this thinner Mac book.

    boring.
    stale.

Uh, where are the thunderbolt ports in the Surface studio? For moving massive quantities of video and other data, there is no equivalent to thunderbolt.

I can attach my iPad Pro to the MacBook Pro with duet display and the iPad will still function as touch screen with the entire setup being completely portable. And I wouldn't have to use that dog of an OS known as Windows.

The iPad has a wealth of software and far more is available for iOS than Windows. The MacBook Pro is well built and portable, unlike the studio. And the cost of the whole setup is still less than the studio which is not portable, doesn't include thunderbolt and with an annoying and aggravating OS.

4199 for a studio with a core i7 and touch screen running Windows 10. These machines aren't going to sell well.

  • Microsoft debuts Surface Studio all-in-one PC, refreshes high-end Surface Book

No Thunderbolt ports. And for 3k?!? Interesting idea but the studio is not portable and Apple is readying a new iPad Pro with the A11X.

And worst of all is that it requires Windows 10.

I'll wait patiently for the next generation iPad Pro.

And what does MSFT mean by saying the Surface book is three times faster than the MacBook Pro? Is Skylake really that much faster than Broadwell? I find that hard to believe. Perhaps in graphics performance?

The market for the Studio is quite limited. And if Microsoft expects serious content creation on this machine, the lack of Thunderbolt is a serious limitation.
