  • No need for 4K display on Apple's iPhone 7 because of screen quality, expert claims

Apple has done magnificent job at optimizing the LCD screen. However, there is little room for further optimization. They will never be as thin as OLED panels and can never match the lower power consumption.

OLED panels have a number of advantages which is why Apple uses them in the watch. The watch has greater brightness than any other panel Apple uses in their mobile products.

OLED panels will be coming to the iPhone. The manufacturing capacity just  isn't there for the numbers of iPhones Apple sells. It's coming soon.

  • iPhone 7 teardown confirms Intel modem in AT&T, T-Mobile models

AT&T+T-Mobile>>Verizon+Sprint as far as the number of customers are concerned.

GSM is the world wide standard anyhow. There are a few countries that use CDMA, but making international calls using Verizon overseas service is quite costly. It would be better to get a prepaid local phone.

Unless one desires to switch from AT&T or T-Mobile to Verizon, the whole issue is moot. I really doubt that Intel modem phones are going to sell for much less than QCOM ones in the used market anyhow. I am on AT&T and if I were to switch, it would be to T-Mobile. Verizon's over priced service and Sprint's inferior service wouldn't be considered at all.

Eliminating QCOM from the supply chain is a very good move. This is only the first step in the process. With Intel's business will come access to some of their other advanced technology such as 3D Xpoint memory which QCOM could never offer to Apple. Intel's modems are going to soon seriously outperform QCOM offerings anyhow.

I've been on an iPhone since the initial release and when Cingular which later became AT&T was the exclusive carrier. Used iPhones have always commanded a premium price no matter the network.

  • US Treasury guidance could stop Apple from recouping Irish taxes at home

Apple negotiated a deal with Ireland. If the Irish were happy with the deal, then no harm, no foul. Besides, the deal was made before Ireland became a member of the EU.

The EU is being pretty disingenuous. This is an attempt at a cash grab because Apple has lots of it.

What is the EU doing? Are they really helping Ireland? Because if they are, the Irish certainly aren't wanting it. They are actually appealing the ruling.

And if the Greeks, Italians, and whoever else can't manage their respective nation's finances, it isn't Apple's obligation to help with the bailout.

The EU needs to sit down with Ireland and perhaps Apple and discuss the situation. The heavy handed tactics aren't helping anyone.

Apple will not and should not pay more than what they are legally obligated to do. Whether the laws are fair or not is another issue.

Let's look at this from the opposite perspective. If Apple went into Ireland and poisoned the land with toxic waste, going out of business in doing so, would the EU be so willing to pay billions in clean up costs to help the Irish? Where was the EU when BP spilled all of that oil in the Gulf of Mexico? The EU certainly benefitted from all of the petrodollars BP was making. The Gulf coast paid a dear price and the EU said and did nothing. Now they are coming to the rescue of the poor Irish who are being bilked monetarily by Apple. This ranks of pure hypocrisy and those who defend the EU's rank policies stink with the stench of the organization also. Never mind that BP took adavantage of US tax laws also.

I suspect the heavy handed rules of the EU are what prompted Brexit. And the EU is doing the same to Ireland. If the Irish aren't given a fair chance, they too may leave the EU. And the continent can do one of two things. Suck it up and watch the organization dissolve. Or go to war against the English and Irish akin to the US Civil war to force them to stay part of the "Union."

  • AT&T & T-Mobile versions of iPhone 7 likely using Intel modem incompatible with Sprint & Verizon

I am an AT&T customer and have been for a very long time going back to the days when they were Cingular. Back in those days I had Verizon POTs service. Verizon's policies and customer were terrible. I will never go back to them. They use an outdated standard in CDMA which admittedly has superior range to GSM and provides better voice coverage, but few else across the globe use the standard. The Koreans do, along with a few third world nations, but nearly everyone else is on GSM. Only the Chinese use both extensively but it is far easier to swap out a SIM card in an unlocked phone than swapping CDMA service.

Verizon forced all of us who have no desire to use them to pay for CDMA support in the modems for Apple's iPhones. And Qualcomm uses those profits to pay for developing their Snapdragon processors which go into Android phones and directly compete with the iPhone. Why wouldn't Apple not want to move to a different supplier who does not compete directly with their premier product?

Intel has abandoned mobile chips altogether. They won't be using those profits to build products that will be competing with Apple. Wasn't it the reason Apple moved their fabrication requirements to TSMC from Samsung as Samsung used the profits from building A series chips to advance their own smartphones?

There are many T-Mobile and AT&T customers who would be interested in used iPhones. The number of customers on those networks exceeds those of Verizon and Sprint anyhow. With the combination of DirecTV and AT&T mobile offering unlimited data, all Verizon can do is react. They do nothing to benefit the consumer. They react primarily to the other wireless companies who actually provide consumer benefits. All they do is tout the superiority of their network which really isn't that much better than AT&T. The Sprint network has poor coverage. T-Mobile isn't actually that bad in their coverage and their data speeds are in fact, better than Verizon's.

I will ill purchase the AT&T version of the iPhone 7+ and frankly am happy it comes with the Intel modem. It won't be long before Intel builds a modem with CDMA support anyhow. With Apple's support and technical expertise, Intel's product will exceed QCOM soon enough.

  • Apple announces water resistant iPhone 7: pressure sensing home button, dual cameras, jet black fin

Does anyone have any additional info on the A10 fusion processor? I'm certain it is being manufactured using TSMC's new integrated fan out process. But the CPU gains seem better than would be expected on their 16 nm FF process using InFO. Is this built on 10 nm?

That kind of performance puts the machine into the ballpark of entry level MacBook Pro machines.

Incredible. Can't wait for the A10X.
