  • Intel foundries to manufacture ARM-based smartphone chips

It is doubtful that Intel will get Apple's business readily. TSMC has developed InFO which allows for thinner chip profiles. In addition, TSMC is about to move into the lead with respect to advanced manufacturing on smaller nodes.

While integrating the modem as part of the SoC allows for certain advantages, TSMC has other advantages over Intel.

Time will tell, but it is doubtful that Apple moves to Intel foundries anytime soon.

  • FaceTime video chat competitor Google Duo released for iOS, Android

If that screenshot is Google Duo's best quality, they've got miles to go until it matches FaceTime.

FaceTime seems to work quite well when it actually rings, the negotiation speed is much improved in iOS 10. About half the time however the callee's phone doesn't ring, and there's no indication of the failure at all on the calling device, making it pretty much useless unless you pre-negotiate FaceTime over a normal call. Handoff between (Apple) access points is pretty poor too, with the call often dropping when switching.

Other than that I find it's generally very clear and very little lag, and the integration into the phone app is good.

Apple did promise to open the FaceTime API when it was introduced, but no cigar. Unfortunately a communications platform just doesn't work unless it's cross platform, you can't restrict yourself to only calling iOS device owners! iMessage has automatic fallback so not so much of a problem cross platform.
Duo is not ideal app for cross platform functions either. It is only for iOS and android. It doesn't work in Windows or Macintosh. With Skype all the bases are covered. Duo is redundant and unnecessary.

  • French, German ministers to meet in push to counter encrypted messaging apps

This whole thread has gone off of the deep end.

That being said, there's little feasibility in the French plan. Backdoors will always backfire. They should ask Microsoft how they one fared on that one. Or perhaps the implications of the Russians breaching the Democratic party's computers. Was a backdoor used? Was it perhaps supplied by Microsoft's golden key?

Encryption software is easy to obtain also. And much of it is used to engage in clandestine affairs and the like. It will never go away. Even if China, the United States, Europe and Russia force backdoors. What's to stop someone like the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) from developing software that enables secure communications electronically and the software released to the general public? Perhaps with a key only known to them. Or the Singaporeans doing the same thing? Perhaps the Taiwanese or Koreans would like to produce secure software without backdoors at all? Or the Finns and Swedes. Encryption isn't a difficult subject to learn. They are just mathematical algorithms which simply scramble the data. And the sophisticated electronics of today makes it a pretty trivial matter to hide information and a Herculean task to unscramble without the key. Putting someone else in control of a second key is a very bad thing. If the terrorists get hold of such a key, they could listen in on secret government communications putting populations at even greater risk.

Besides, homing pigeons can be used very effectively for clandestine communication that would be very difficult if not nearly impossible to stop. The terrorists will always find ways around such measures.

  • Chrome 53 will begin phase-out of Adobe Flash, Google says

I chuckle when remembering the "real Internet" blathering when iOS premiered without Flash support. I don't think Jobs was ahead of his time on this (many tech people knew Flash was a dangerous feral hog that needed to be slaughtered) but he had the guts to actually do something about it. The very trolls that castigated Apple for banning Flash on iOS now bash Flash too. The hypocrisy is to be savored.
Yes, and of course... those miscreant Flash supporters are nowhere to be found.  For ages, criticizing, insulting, and otherwise swagging their superiority god-complex around as if they were the sole oracle for all things Internet.  Just scurrying in a back-room corner hoping no one calls them out.

Flash still can't die fast enough.  It's like the dismembered-knight scene in Monty Python.  Just be gone with it.

Any site I come across that requires Flash I ignore from that point forward.  To imagine the amount of fossil fuels burned to provide power to all those electronic devices that would shoot to 100% CPU when Flash kicked in.  Damn...  Adobe should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to support this bad dream.

The knight scene in Monty Python was hilarious and so very aptly described those that supported flash.

It is also very true that Flash cannot die fast enough. Resource hog, security nightmare and unnecessary.

I too will leave websites that make Flash a requirement and go elsewhere. And the more that do this, the faster it will die and the software most definitely needs to die.

Your man Trump was all in favour of forcing Apple to provide a back door for their encryption, and he even called for a boycott of Apple. Just wondering what exactly you stand for. Either you're with Apple or you're with Trump.
Trump at least is honest about where he stands. Unlike Obama and his successor Hillary, who give lip service, yet put guys like Comey as head of the FBI and try to do the same thing Trump espouses.

Make no mistake, the Dems aren't any better on issues of privacy. They do pay better lip service and mind their manners better. But they aren't any better than Trump.

Assange of Wikileaks believes that Clinton will be worse than Trump when it comes to freedom of the press.

Trump is a poor answer to the poor leadership issues of the nation. However, Clinton is absolutely no better and likely even worse.

I am pretty depressed about the state of politics. Both candidates are terrible.
