  • Apple confirms fix for ultrawide monitors with M1 Apple Silicon Macs is coming

fyi, you can buy any iMac with an industry standard "VESA" mount instead of the stand and then put it on any old adjustable arm you want. Many are rotating. It'd be nice if that was just the standard and then the Mac stand was detachable, I guess, but maybe less Apple-y.

I could definitely imagine the next major revision of iMac using the XDR Display mount and then shipping with a basic stand, and letting users upgrade to the crazy thousand dollar stand at their discretion…

  • Apple in 'prolonged' talks to acquire two John Lasseter films

Oh, and for all you cancel culture warriors here, make sure you stop using internet browsers. Remember, you canceled Brendan Eich, the creator of Javascript because he dared support traditional marriage. At the very least you should disable Javascript to make your internet experience more pure. And whatever you do don’t user Firefox. Eich was a founder of Mozilla don’t you know. And the Brave browser so many of you celebrate, Eich is the CEO. So that browser is out too I guess. What browsers do you have left to use?
    Fuck Brandon Eich.

One can "support traditional marriage" without trampling over the rights of those who think differently than him. Gay marriage doesn't eliminate or threaten straight marriage. Or am I mistaken? Now that gay marriage has been legal for what, five or more years, can straight people no longer get married? /s He's an asshole.

As for Lasseter… I agree, people like him do deserve a second chance. But he's also filthy rich. Maybe he should just be creative on his own dime. There are plenty of animators who aren't creeps that Apple could sponsor.

  • New Kensington Thunderbolt 3 dock has 100W power delivery, dual 4K display support

I feel kind of bad for these dock manufacturers… Apple releases the 16" with a buck-wild 100 watt charger, we all complain, the dock guys come through for us… and the 16" M1 is going to require nowhere close to this much juice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Electron apps are a fscking plague. It’s shameful that the very people who should care most about quality apps — developers — have embraced this hacky platform.
Electron fills a niche for getting "good enough"… So what's the plaque-free alternative to Electron? I'm not being facetious, I'm not in love with Electron either, but at least for personal/hobby projects (spending my own money) I haven't found other alternatives that meet the cross platform dev/deploy criteria and don't want to lock into proprietary toolsets or runtimes.
I really have no problem with Electron for personally/hobby projects. I wouldn't even mind if something like Twitter was built with it, I could just use the website if it bothered me.

The problem is when Electron is used for important, "mission-critical" stuff. I spend most of my day in Visual Studio Code and the remainder in Slack. The performance of particularly the latter is notoriously bad. All of the gains in CPU power over the past ten years (not just this new M1 stuff) thrown away, the advantages of UIKit and SwiftUI completely ignored. Even without an M1 processor my Mac should be unbelievably fast, instead it's blowing fans and chewing up the battery so I can run web apps.

Today I made the decision to move from VSCode to Panic’s Nova, incidentally. A breath of fresh air, a real Mac-assed app.

One last example — Authy, the multi-factor auth app. Not only were the folks at Twilio too lazy to make a native Mac version, they didn't even bother making a desktop UI. It's just the iPhone UI running on the desktop. It's terrible. Fortunately I just learned that 1Password has an MFA feature that I somehow overlooked, so I'm busy converting all my accounts over… but god, what a crap implementation of a fairly vital function.
