  • What you need to know: Apple's iCloud Photos and Messages child safety initiatives

It is not scanning for photos of a mother taking a picture of her child. It is scanning for know photos of child pornography and abuse.
Excellent point, but even further than that. It's comparing HASH to HASH not PHOTO to PHOTO of already KNOWN child pornography/abuse. Very different things and only delusional to think this is some sort of privacy concern.

As for photo message monitoring as part of the parental controls, this is on phone and NOT SENT TO APPLE with an alert going to the parent only. Every responsible parent should enable it on their children's phones. This shouldn't be a news flash, but here in the USA and I'm guessing most other countries, if your child is under 18 and sends nude photos of themselves to a girl/boy friend etc, they have just committed a crime as they have just become purveyors of child porn. The person they just sent that photo to is also potentially criminally liable for possession of child pornography.

  • ProtonMail CEO says Apple strong-armed adoption of in-app purchases

    That's not a choice that's an ultimatum

Just because one doesn’t like the choices one has does not make it an ultimatum. And just because only one store exits for iOS apps does not make it a monopoly. That would require it to be the only choice available for both the phone purchaser and the app vendor. In both cases the end user and app developer has a choice/options.  To believe otherwise  would be significantly flawed logic.

For an app developer making an email client, they can choose:
    1) Windows
    2) Mac
    3) Linux
    4) iOS
    5) Android
    6) Web App (Also available to all clients above.)

Obviously a large number of choices. Don’t like paying a commission for your app being offered to millions of users - YOU HAVE A CHOICE of what platform to support. By means of a web app you can circumvent any gain by outside vendors and hit any OS in the process.

Now the crux of the matter is that why does an email client want to have a dedicated app on iOS?? Because that is where end users actually spend money and on far larger proportion than than the next leading competitor.

The issue plain and simple is developer greed wrapped up in a guise of poor me. A 30% commission dropping to 15% after one year is hardly unreasonable. If those rates are breaking the bank, simple business processes mean you aren’t charging enough to cover overhead. And no matter what storefront you are in, there will be overhead.

I’ve owned a business and also worked for a furniture wholesaler. If you think 30% is too much for a retailer to “markup” a product then I suggest not ever buying furniture. That tends to be marked up 100-125% by retailers let alone what the manufacturer/wholesaler marks it up. From my understanding the clothes on your back are likely the same, if not higher.

  • Apple says a common charger would handicap innovation, inflate waste

USB-C is hardly the answer. The company I work for uses brand “D” computers which have all switched over to a USB-C docking station. The connections are constantly breaking both on the dock side and the internal minuscule tab inside the port. Lightning as a port is far more robust. As for the cable fraying issue - in 10 years of using iPhones and iPads I have never had one fray. I know I’ve seen other people do it - just can’t figure out what they are doing to make that happen. But that technically wouldn’t be too difficult to make more sturdy for those trying to use their cables as lassoes.
Apples cables are expensive crap, I’ve gotten far more life out of third party cables.
And yet the only Apple cable I’ve had an issue with is a first gen magnetic connection on a first gen Intel MacBook Pro.

As respects 3rd party lighting cables, those I’ve had far worse problems with. They don’t fray out externally, but the internal wires don’t hold up and stop functioning. I have had far longer use out of Apple Lightning cables to the point that from a house of 4 people all having iPhones and iPads and regular upgrades to them, there are cables in virtually every room of the house with some being in the 5+ year range. Not one has been tossed out for not working or fraying out.

I would not have a use for a Windows computer if someone gave one to me. I spent too many years in the past having to constantly repair startup files just to get the damned thing to boot.
LOL. How many decades ago was that? Windows 10 is pretty much bullet proof on decent hardware.
I have heard that a number of times. As an IT tech, I've been doing deployments of Windows 10 for 6-8 months after the final approval from corporate that it was now mature enough to start using. In those past months, I have seen far more BSOD crashes than in the past three years of Windows 7. Even Microsoft has managed to cause their own hardware to BSOD on a constant basis with poor QA of patches.
