  • A bride-to-be discovers a reality-bending mistake in Apple's computational photography

    This looks fake.

People that know the iPhone camera image process pipeline are saying it is impossible for it to end up with results like this. With live photos turned off the camera captures multiple frames in a very short period of time, too short for the movement seen in the video. Those frames are taken at different exposures etc and only produce one sharp de-noised image, not three.

Whether the image is genuine or not, the Apple Genius is either misquoted or wrong because Apple does not beta test in the way he is claimed to have said.

Since Coates is a standup comedian I don’t know how seriously to take this, perhaps it is all just part of some joke. I guess we’ll have to watch her next show to find out.

  • iPad Air refresh could skip event for press release launch instead

I think there is a good chance of seeing iPads on Tuesday (probably an Air with M2) for the following reasons:

    1) Last time the iPad Air was updated (18 months ago) it was a complete surprise to everyone. Gurman and the rest of the rumor mill insisted there would be no iPads at that time but everyone was wrong. They could all be wrong about this again.

    2) The iPad Air has been announced in September alongside iPhone in the past. The update before last, (3 years ago) was alongside iPhones in September. So those (like Jason Snell) that are saying “iPads are a different event”, are just plain wrong.

    3) A couple of days ago Procreate unveiled amazing iPad only animation software. This software would be perfect for Apple to feature in an iPad announcement. The Procreate software was announced very early because it won’t be available until November 22. In the past, companies have unveiled new products days before Apple events because their product is being featured in an Apple demo and they want to announce it themselves and tell their own story rather than it just show up in another company’s video. The Procreate Dream announcement could foreshadow a Procreate Dream demo on a new iPad Air during the event on Tuesday.

    4) The iPad Air will get M2. It will be the last device to get M2 just as it was the last device to get M1. It’s not going to get M3 (as Gurman has lazily suggested) because that would obviously make it better than the iPad Pro. Since it will get M2 it will be probably be announced before the M3 product cycle begins. So if an M3 iMac is coming in October, I think Apple will want to do the M2 iPad Air in September.

  • Apple Vision Pro still has a way to go

This close to launch, the hardware is locked. What we saw is what we’ll get, with only very minor changes such as to straps.

It is curious that Apple did not show EyeSight to the media. Many people are assuming that it will look weird off angle and that it is not an actual image of you. We’ll have to wait and see.

Most likely, Apple did not show it because they are not ready to reveal all the secrets of how it works. Others companies are going to try to copy it and Apple isn’t going to help them get started.

Mike Rockwell revealed that the headset generates a different EyeSight view for each person looking at it. I think a key question is: how many of these different views can it generate at once and the lenticular lens cope with? My guess is that it will look incredible when 1-3 people are looking at it but might start to look a bit weird for additional people depending on the angle they are at. But maybe they really are able to create enough views that it never looks weird even if there is a crowd of people looking at it. Whatever number of views they decided they needed probably took years of work to determine and is the key piece of data that Apple will want to hold back from competitors. So I don’t think Apple are keeping this feature under wraps because it looks bad but rather because they don’t want to help others get started in copying it.

  • iPhone will catch a sales block in EU countries if Apple limits USB-C

So people at the EU are writing letters to Apple because of irrational paranoia they read on the internet.

This entire rumor is based on a misunderstanding. Apple need to switch to USB-C in a way that maintains backwards compatibility with old Lightning accessories, so yes compatible MFi cables are still needed.

Besides, everyone knows that there are many different kinds of USB-C cable, even if they all have plugs that look the same. Not all offer maximum data and charging speeds. How can people know what a cable can do? Right now they don’t. The USB consortium failed! So there is obviously still a place for MFi type labelling so that consumers know they are buying a cable that is fully capable with iPhone. That’s not the same thing as limiting capable cables. Capable cables will obviously work. They are just providing a way of identifying capable cables, which is what the USB consortium have failed to do.

  • YouTubers test durability of Apple Watch Ultra in different ways

The video is worth watching just to see how many times he had to hit it with a big hammer before it broke. Of course, the test would have been more lifelike if someone was wearing it at the time.

If you’re buying one of these you will find this reassuring, and that might be worth the few cents the YouTuber makes by your watching it.

You don’t need to worry about this thing breaking. An impact hard enough to break this thing would also smash all the bones in your wrist. So no, you don’t need a case for it.
