  • Apple's March Event: a big new move into subscription software

"Rather than Adobe trying to hype up the Healing Brush as the reason to pay for an all-new Photoshop"… Except Adobe's now doing something worse, with little recourse for subscribers: pushing out half-baked, buggy software, with new "features" that few are asking for while very often ignoring the bugs each new release adds to the list. Back in the days when I could buy Photoshop (and Illustrator and Indesign), I could wait out a buggy release or ignore one whole "upgrade" entirely. Now, if a colleague or customer automatically updates their version(s) of Adobe CC, I have to as well or I won't be able to open their files (Photoshop is more forgiving than AI or ID in this regard). In general, the "features" are getting less and less useful (Photoshop reversing SHIFT to constrain proportions is one egregious example) as well but I imagine Adobe needs to offer a bullet point list of "new!" every now and then to justify the expensive subscription. I guess they have little to lose as they have a monopoly on industry essential design software for the foreseeable future. So, after years of paying Adobe for a subscription, the moment I decide not to pay anymore, I can no longer open a single file I created in their software. How is this fair? Why are you cheering?

  • How to live with Apple's absurdly over-complicated music features on Apple Watch

As an avid music user with both purchased iTunes as well as an Apple Music subscription (and has experienced the Music app on both LTE and non-LTE Apple Watches)... who uses both airplay and bluetooth to multiple devices, I find the interface perplexing and frustrating at times and I'm grateful for this article.

  • Comparing Apple's new 2018 13-inch MacBook Air to the 12-inch MacBook

The single USB port on the 12” MacBook is one of the stupidest design decisions made in a long time. That feature alone creates enough usability issues to remove it from consideration.
I haven’t found it to be a problem. Most USB-C hubs have pass-through charging now, and third party hubs are now plentiful.
That's the problem - you need to carry a hub in addition to whatever else you plug in, so a basic-use scenario of needing to charge your laptop and use a flash drive or other accessory at the same time requires you to purchase and carry a separate hub. I know of no other laptop on the market that forces you to choose between charging and using an accessory. Adding one more USB port (or, God forbid, keeping the MagSafe connector for charging) would completely eliminate the problem.

Of course, I need to carry a USB A-C dongle as well, so I might as well just get an extra bag to carry all the accessories.
"so I might as well just get an extra bag to carry all the accessories" Can't you just put the dongle and/or hub in the same bag you're using to carry the charger, cable and USB key? Or is there no room left after you stuff in your bottle of whine?

  • Jony Ive discusses 'fragile' ideas leading to design of iPhone, App Store

If you ask me, this guy is being way too glorified and getting way too much credit.. All one has to do is look at some of the absolute amateurish F-UPS in the last few years both in design and ergonomics. Stating with the Igore battery case.. to iphone on/off buttons and ui ergonomics, to apple pencil and everything about it ( except the latency) , the mac pro( mind freaking buggeling ) , the whole dongle mess. And the whole BS of Clutter FREE. It is not clutter free.. its CLUTTER SCATTER. .. its parallel to taking your garbage out of your home and dumping it on the sidewalk right at your door. .... Too many issues..yet all shrowded by eloquent elitist talk and the B accent. Sigh.
"If you ask me,…". Nope. No one did.

  • Reduced iPhone battery life blamed on adoption of OLED screens

I was sure I read that OLED was supposed to be better for battery life because the black pixels were really off and not consuming power as opposed to just masking an always-on backlight.
