  • Apple expected to lay iOS 17 sideloading groundwork at WWDC 2023

@thrang Excellent points about the rest of us being compromised by the schmuck who lets a side loaded App run sweep up their contacts. I can hardly wait for the unsolicited texts, emails and maybe even snail mail. Nothing like being collateral damage to something you had nothing to do with. For the naysayers think about Tik Tok releasing their app to side load where they can do anything they see fit. If there are complaints about privacy now wait until the side loads start.

  • A practical guide for why spatial audio music is great

It’s a n alteration of the music that no artist once. Music is recorded and produced as the artist and producer want it done. What they do not want is it altered in any way. Nothing but another audio gimmick.

  • If you're a Tesla owner, employees might be sharing your camera recordings

Is anyone surprised that people who can work for a psychopathic a-hole are a-holes themselves? The boss a-hole has already crapped out and flushed anyone who isn't his brand of a-holery, and not just in Tesla. He should wind up just like his hero, Nikola Tesla, a con man/hustler with one good idea and a lifetime of bad decisions leaving him alone, friendless, staggering drunk on his own Kool-Aid.
Can you provide us a list of your accomplishments? I will say 100% certainty you have done little to nothing that is even noteworthy whereas Musk, whom you describe psychopathic a-hole, will remembered as one of the greatest leaders in history:
    • Tesla: Against all odds he created a successful car company and brought EV's to the masses. No other car company has been able to come close to what he has done and they are established manufacturers with everything to make a car in place. They chose to get passed by a newcomer. I still do not have much hope for Ford or GM and Toyota has mostly sat the quest for EV's out. I am not sure how anyone will catch Teslain the near term as he is years ahead and not letting off of the gas.
    • SpaceX: First privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to put a commercial satellite in orbit. First private company to successfully launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft. First private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). Has rockets that return to their takeoff spot. Prior to SpaceX Lockheed Martin and Boeing sat on fat, competition free contracts with NASA delivering the status quo, with no hope of every doing what Musk did.
    • Starlink: Created a company delivering Internet to numerous area and countries that stood zero change of getting high speed service. The market leader prior to Starlink was Hughes Net which pales in comparison to Starlink even though it is early stage.
    • PayPal: Cofounder.
    • Add in battery production, work on solar and probably some stuff I cannot think of.
Note that this is more than one good idea. That is four game-changing companies he founded, co-founded or leads. As close to Steve Jobs as anyone has been in a long time. No question his behavior is questionable, but he has gotten results. If you have someone to compare him to please let us all know.

  • iPhone is still the top smartphone choice for teenagers

This tells me that Android users are not in the desirable demographic. Kind of like owning a Buick.

  • GM ditching CarPlay & Android Auto for Google-built infotainment system

Fully understand GM. Never wanted a device dependent on another device. That’s why I never liked the Apple watch. However, I also don’t want a subscription based car entertainment system. I think I stick to my 2002 Lexus LX470 for the foreseeable future…:)
You don’t like devices that are dependent on other devices, but you are okay with devices that are wholly dependent on other services … such as your phone’s relationship to cellular & wi-fi, your home’s dependence on electricity and water, or your Lexus model’s addiction to gasoline and mechanics …

But even putting that aside … car manufacturers have for decades now had their own infotainment systems in cars, and some of them had subscriptions before, like Sirius or OnStar. The difference was that if you plugged in an iPhone or Android phone, you could CHOOSE to override the generally-poor built-in system with a vastly superior system from Apple or Google. Both are fine, one collects and sells a lot of data on you and the other doesn’t, but they are both designed with users in mind and are highly functional.

That’s not what is happening here: GM is planning to remove the option for your phone’s apps and services to override the built-in infotainment system, and they don’t give a flying crap if you like it or not. Not only will data be collected and sold by both GM and Google, but you’ll pay extra for the privilege, and even more later if you hold onto the car for more than eight years.

If that sounds good to you … you must be a GM executive who’s going to get a big bonus for thinking up such a consumer-hostile idea.
The best thing about CarPlay and Android Auto is your infotainment system is always current. Manufacturer infotainment systems are out of date before you drive off the lot and obsolete within a few years. They do not want any reason for you to keep your car or let someone keep it current.
