  • Chinese discount phone makers were supposed to rival Apple's iPhone globally. Instead, the...

    This doesn’t really explain why...

Basically anyone can design a phone, and slap Android on it.  Samsung does well because they have the best hardware.

Apple beats everyone because they have the superior ecosystem and integration.  Google is trying break in on that by creating their own phone.  They thought good software (Android) was enough, but supporting thousands of different phones (hardware) is a fools game.  Updating them with new software is a monumental task.  Without the latest software (OS) users can purchase the latest software apps, and that’s where Google gets their cut.

Theoretically Google has an edge on all other Android phones long term, but that’s not true in China...

In China, there will probably be 5 (or less) survivers, and they’ll be the ones with massive resources needed to build out their own ecosystems.

Sad but true, the little guys “discount phone makers” don’t stand a chance.  The large manufacturers have scale advantages, customer tie-in with the ecosystem, and don’t necessarily need to make a profit by selling the phone (hardware).

  • Apple's proposed Australian flagship store faces public opposition, called 'Pizza Hut pago...

    No comment.  I hate malls...

Making me walk past a bunch of stores that I have no interest in, to get where I need to go, is a waste of my time.

They probably also have parallel parking... shudder.

  • Apple's iOS 11 installed on 65% of compatible devices, up 6% from December

The autocorrect bug has left me devastated, and unable to work... LOL

Wiping the device between major updates works every time.  Sure, backing up (and restoring) the device takes longer, and iTunes is garbage but it’s worth it to avoids all the issues mentioned.

iOS 11 seems to be a “love it” or “hate it” release, but I barely noticed the difference after a day.  Apple Pay Cash is going to be very useful...

  • Third iPhone battery lawsuit says Apple used slowdowns to avoid fixing defects

They’re getting closer to getting the lawsuit to stick...

But the most perplexing thing is Apple doesn’t see to realize they’ve done anything wrong.

Lawyering-up isn’t going to solve their PR problem.

I think the lawsuits could win under the Lemon Law (implied warranties).

There are two types of warranties for product purchases, express warranties and implied warranties. Express warranties make specific promises about product repair, and are usually made in writing. An express warranty may be provided by the manufacturers in owner's manuals and other written sales or marketing materials. Implied warranties arise from a manufacturer's duty to meet certain minimum standards of quality whereby the product is fit for use for the purpose intended. An implied warranty arises from the sale itself, and need not be in writing. In each type the manufacturer assumes the liability and responsibility to correct the defect and, in the event that they cannot meet that duty, may be required to repurchase or replace the product.

  • Questionable rumor claims Apple 'considering' 2018 update to budget 9.7-inch iPad

The $329 9.7 is $299 most places, and was on sale on Back Friday etc. for $250.

The problem is there is no 64Gb version.

My nephew recently broke his screen on an older IPad (64Gb) so checked...

I like the $250 price, a lot of people will buy that rather than repair the screen for $150.

The 128Gb (next step up) is $400 making repairing the screen a better option.

The IPad 10.5 (64Gb) is $600 which is pricey for a gift.

The LTE adds $129 to the price.  I’m not sure why it’s so much...  probably why Apple and Qualcomm are ducking it out in court.

    I’d set the prices at 9.7 $250 (32Gb), $350 (128Gb) and 10.5 (64Gb) $500

If LTE was free through carriers (they eat the cost) that would make the tablets a lot more useful.

With T-mobile adding a tablet (unlimited) is $20...
