  • U.S. census employees will trade paper forms for 500,000 iPhone 8 handsets this year

    I filled mine out online.

Stupid questions as usual.  Asking skin color and ancestry is anti-American.  Makes me want to send them a picture of my white butt cheeks, and let them make a determination.

All they really need is population numbers... (& ages)

Asking if I was fluent in English would have (actually) been useful, but they didn’t ask that.

  • Apple's A12Z Bionic chip could be a re-binned A12X

Intel used to limit clock speeds to meet different price points.  I’m not sure they ever disabled cores unless there was an issue.  I seem to remember a processor sold as 3 cores because of an issue with the 4th...

I suspect that’s what happened here.  They probably fixed the 8th core a while ago, but left it disabled for consistency.  With a new product shipping, that doesn’t matter.

I remember many years ago people hunting down certain batches of processors to maximize over clocking.  That’s a headache when a midrange processor is just as stable (fast) as the top of the line (break the bank) processor.

  • Quad-core Core i5 processor is a big boost for 2020 MacBook Air

No one has the i7 version to test yet? How does this compare to last years MBP?
Not that I’m aware of.  But, if you’re in the market for the i7 you’re probably looking for the MacBook Pro with discrete graphics. In other words, you’re a “power user”.

In my mind, the Air is more of mass-market machine that’s aggressively priced to take market share and grow its user base.  The i5 is the sweet spot.  My concern with the i7 (Air) is battery life and the ability to sustain higher speeds without overheating.

There have been complaints in the past that these slim laptops (different brands) aren’t as fast as expected.  There might even have been lawsuits... that might be why Apple’s new processor in the Air has a lower clock speed, to give it more consistent real world performance.

    edit
The new Air isn’t actually available yet.  We’ll probably get an i7 review/comparison later...

  • Law enforcement can crack iPhones just fine without a backdoor

I remember reading a few years ago how one police departments server crashed and they lost everything.  They had no backups, so all active cases/charges had to be dropped.

We tend to think of the police as one monolithic organization, but it is not.  Not only does police corruption very widely, but so does their capabilities and training.

About a year ago, I watched a video on prisons in Germany.  They also discussed how they do things differently.  All police are trained in a central location, and are trained in deescalation.  The prisons are focused on rehabilitation and not punishment.

The differences are striking, individuals killed by police are 100x less (adjusted by population) and relatively few people are incarcerated.

One thing odd about America is our inability to observe someone/something else, and improve.  When we were taking our firsts steps down universal healthcare... my thought was WTF are we doing?  We didn’t look to what was working elsewhere, and seek to improve on it.  We instead asked our insurance and healthcare companies.  If anyone hasn’t noticed, our rates have skyrocketed...

We might want to look outside the USA on the encryption debate also...
