  • French publishers ask Tim Cook to abandon forthcoming Web Eraser

I'm tired of gatekeepers breaking business models as they please. Meta/Facebook completely removed Groups API with v19.0 and with that integrations and companies that had built plugins around that API (https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/05/meta-cuts-off-third-party-access-to-facebook-groups-leaving-developers-and-customers-in-disarray/

We have Google planning to deprecate some cookies. Not to limit tracking but to force companies to do tracking through Google Advertising Manager with PPID.

And we have Apple being so tired of creators that editing the products from publishers is fine with Apple.

Content can be financed either by ads and/or by paywall. Removing ads without paying is stealing. Surely there must be legal limitations to tracking etc. and users should have the option to avoid tracking by paying. But to let customers skip payment and modify products shouldn't be allowed. And yes... the first digital device from Jobs/Woz allowed people to call long distance without paying. To see something similar from Apple today is not OK.

  • AI computer showdown - MacBook Air vs. Microsoft Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC

Nice to see more competition in this area. With TSMC and ARM-based tech, the Apple M-series had a huge advantage to x86 and Intel.
Now we see Microsoft being able to offer something similar and add innovation with touch based inputs and CoPilot designed for Windows.

And while things are moving forward in PC-land, we have Apple blocking touch from macOS, penny-pinching on memory, and there is still no LLM in macOS.
WWDC better be good, the transition to M4 should move fast, and the basic AI features must get here in Q3.

Disruption makes it all interesting again.

  • Japan could be next to force third-party app stores on Apple

That 30% standard was in place before Android phones existed and before iPhone had a significant market share.
If you can add a 43% tax on all products (= take a 30% cut), then the market isn't working. Apple is being a gatekeeper. Tacit collusion is still not OK.
"If we would not submit to an emperor, we should not submit to an autocrat of trade" - Sherman.

Reagan broke AT&T into pieces in 1982 after AT&T for years forced users to buy or rent devices at inflated prices in order to even use the network.
TicketMaster is the only outlet for Live Nation venues - same company. So... one monopoly in many regions create another monopoly.

The clean solution would be that platform vendors can't sell apps. Apple could offer free apps but all other apps would have to be bought from independent stores.

  • Old iPads are a staple in US homes, long after they've gone obsolete

The fact an iPhone is actually a phone doesn't mean nothing?
Sure - to some iPhone is a personal accessory. All the focus on colors and the positioning of lenses are so you can tell others that you have the latest and most expensive model. iPad is just iPad and to a lot of parents a digital pacifier for their kids.

I wonder if people stop using iPads causing the number of active users to drop. I stopped using mine like 6 months ago after having used iPads from day 2 and created +30 apps for the platform. I'm just tired of the OS, the latest iPhones are fast and have large displays, and the battery time is much improved on Mac. iPad is the device I don't need.

  • New iPad Pro review roundup: impressive performance held back by iPadOS

if the iPad was just another Mac, then there would be no grief about it not being a Mac. It also wouldn't even exist.
Other vendors are offering laptops with touch. Why wouldn't Apple be able to bring iPadOS and macOS together?
