  • After years of silence, Apple finally reveals how many App Store users it has in Europe

I assume these figures EXCLUDE the UK, post-Brexit, now they’re not part of Europe?
UK is obviously not part of it more than Russia or Serbia is. A few non-EU countries might be included in the numbers as Norway, Iceland, and Lichtenstein have already decided to join the DSA. Some of the companies or services affected: Alibaba, TikTok, Wikipedia, Booking.com, Zalando (clothing), and obviously Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft.

  • Apple shows MR headset to executives ahead of rumored June unveiling

Every time Apple releases a new product, it is met with laughter, doubt, and confusion by the outside world.
There have been many terrible launches. Some never recovered.
    • iPhone 1 didn't sell and got a price cut by 33% (!) after 3 months while the base model was removed.
    • Lisa (2700 ended in a landfill)
    • G4 Cube failed on so many levels and then got repeated by the Trash Mac Pro which also failed.
    • AppleWatch 0 failed (series 0 was sold as a fashion statement with celebrities and fashion designers). Refocused to be about health made it a success.
    • Pippin, Newton, eMate, OpenDoc (did attend the press briefing in London and Apple didn't believe it would fly), AOCE (PowerTalk), iPod HiFi, and the car that never happened. There have been numerous failures.
    • Rhapsody - it was only around 10.4 that Mac OS X started really working.
    • iPod was right. Sure the FireWire was strange but navigation, storage, sync, charging using data cable,... it was perfect from day 1.
    • iPad... same - as a surf + reading tablet with all-day battery at a time when iPhone had a small screen and laptops did 3 hours on a charge.
    • AirPods - probably one of the best products ever by Apple. So well designed and integrated.
I really like the idea of Google Glass but a visor? Apple demand that employees are on-site 3 days per week to interact. They have designed their HQ to create interactions. No capes and no visors :-)

  • Apple may be getting a secret slice of Google Chrome search earnings

I seriously think that without Apple and iOS that Google would be finished as an alternative platform.
Apple Maps didn't exactly kill Google Maps, iTunes Pling didn't kill Facebook, and Apple Music vs. Spotify or Apple TV vs. <any streaming service>... those are also pretty clear. Surely it might be difficult for companies being copied by Apple to make the profit they planned on. The main problem being when Apple installs their copies on all iPhones, offer free trials to owners of iPhone. MS did exactly that when using the dominance of Windows.

Paying protection to avoid the iPhone-juggernaut... the Sherman Act just called and so did EU.

  • New Mac Pro may not support PCI-E GPUs

Apple Silicon is designed as fixed bundles of CPU, GPU, ML, and RAM. It doesn't play well the modularity that has been with us since Mac II. And why buy fixed performance when you can scale using the cloud? Workstations made sense 30 years ago with SGI, NeXT, and Sun Microsystems. Apple should make a partnership with AWS (or make a Mac cloud), improve the dull non-design of Studio, and kill the Pro.

  • M2 Pro & Max GPUs are fast -- but not faster than M1 Ultra

Same tests reveal that M2 Pro (12 cores) in the new desktop mini is delivering a single-thread performance of 1952 compared to MBP 14" M1 Pro (10 cores) doing 1790. The new "mini Pro" is less than 10% faster than M1 Pro laptop on single-threaded. For HTML5 and PDF (graphic design) the desktop M2 Pro is just 5% faster.
